My partner made a mistake yesterday and started filling the TD4 with petrol. There was almost £20 of petrol put in. Once she realised her mistake she thought the best thing to do was immediately dilute it with diesel so she put in £60 of diesel!

She drove home (4 miles) and now the freelander is sat on the drive.

I presume my only option is to now drain the whole tank out and refill with diesel?

I did my back in on wed, so I need to find the easiest way to drain it!
It's a 2003 TD4 with the fuel filter in the rear wheel arch.

Is there an access panel to the fuel tank under the carpet in the boot?

Any advice, suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thx

Lift up seats , remove cover plate , remove pipes, tap ring round with hammer and screw driver, lift out sender , drain fuel, drink beer.

Thanks :)

What's best to use to drain fuel? A piece of hosepipe and siphon or some sort of pump?

Is it easy enough to refit the plate removed by hammer?

I'd drain half and re-dilute then put the half you took out and do the same don't waist money :)

It's a 3:1 ratio at he moment diesel : petrol, I've read lots or problems online about having any petrol at all in modern high pressure diesel systems.....

Problem is that it lowers the flash point and will cause pre ignition and considerable damage to the engine if you don't dilute it. I would remove the tank gauge and siphon out all the fuel and dispose of it, then top it back up with diesel. £70 worth of diesel is far less than extensive engine repairs.

Storing that much fool could be a little bit of a fire risk.

I assume he should buy a new fool tank pump seal ready to refit the pump after draining?

It would be best to take it to the local council waste site and mt it into the waste oil container or contact the local fire service who can advise. A new tank seal would be advisable but the old one should be reusable as long as its not swollen or been damaged on removal.

Why not just disconnect a fuel hose, power up the in tank pump and pump it out???? I'd drain half, top up with diesel run a tank of diesel through it then use the other half! Diesels don't detonate like petrols do! The fuel isn't squashed with the air, only the air is squashed then the fuel is injected at ignition point and it starts burning on injection! They'll tolerate some petrol no probs, you could add a little two stroke oil to replace any lost lubrication. Or you could split your fuel into three if you really want to play it safe!
