Whilst swapping the drag link on the Disco this evening I noticed that the front of the sump is starting to flake rust, so looks like I will be changing it soon.

So the question is how difficult is it to change the sump on a 300Tdi Disco and where is the best place to get one from ?
 
If you need to ask, your not capable of doing it!!

Easy job, but why not just clean off the rust/grease and repaint the surface of the sump with suitable metal primer/top coat (eg plasticote spray). Should be able to do without removing it.

Mark thanks form the reply perfectly happy/capable of swapping a sum rebuilt engines before and done engine transplants but all around the VAG stable not Land Rover.

Didn't have a proper look at how hard it is tonight due to the rain outside, so trying to gauge from the wisdom of Landy Zone as to tips.

To answer your question it is leaking oil where is corroded so not much point trying to patch it.
 
Straight forward enough, did it on my mate's ramp. Got the sump from Bearmach, they were the cheapest at the time. Make sure you change the O-Ring seal on the pickup whilst the sump is off!

Careful! You don't want to end up like the Nissan Navara D22s that had a bad batch of O rings for about two years. Some of these O rings shrink with age and possibly its due to the modern "Semi-Synthetic" oils that are now so popular.
For example the old Petter industrial engines must only be lubricated with Mineral Oil as allegedly semi-synthetic attacks the lift pump diaphragm and one ends up with fuel in the crankcase. Other rubber parts are also at risk of attack. There is also an urban myth that semi-synthetic attacks the bearings but this I find hard to believe.
It is now possible to buy O rings in exotic rubber such at Viton that won't be affected by chemicals. Caveat Emptor.

I used a genuine Land Rover O-Ring, and did a further 20,000 miles no problem. I'd say it's better to replace the seal than to leave the 16 year old one on there anyway!!
 
Jack up the Disco - then put axle stands etc under chassis rails so the front axle hangs down . Plenty of access to sump then .
No gasket available - use some kind of RTV sealant and leave to cure for the full time recommended
 
Also, I found that the RTV sealant starts to cure very quickly once you've applied it, so don't hang around before putting the sump in place.
