NO reverse

Hello all , not a regular on this part of the forum , usually on disco section . However , my wifes TD4 has a gearbox issue . I know what it is , just dont know how to cure it . NO reverse after garage changed the auto box oil . Help , ASAP , cos shes knicked my disco !!

sounds like they removed reverse band locator bolt at back of gearbox ,drain and level are on the bottom of box ,level has a tube that goes upto oil level , it can be easily fixed once box is off the car ,but requires box sitting with torque convertor end upwards and housing removing to get to reverse band to relocate bolt in band

As usual JM to the rescue . I had worked this out , just hoping I was wrong ! Thanks James

They don't know what they are doing. It is a known fault. See the FAQ section . The is a lr doc which covers it. Make sure they pay in full for not knowing what they are doing.

Dated 2002, so ask how many others they have buggered in the last 10 years :doh:

Oh - and while you are at it.... Ask em what temperature they changed the oil at, and see the look on their faces .


Unlikely to be reverse gear - more likely to be reduction gear band.

take it back and threaten them with leagal action

If its got no reverse how did they get it off the ramps?

if they didnt, they must have been blind as well as stupid.

It's a popular problem with auto's reaching high enough miles for a 60k / 5 year service when the auto oil is half replaced.

it doesnt cause damage ,just dislocation of brake band

So Landrover were lying to there own mechanics?

Any news on getting this fixed by the garage?

If this was to happen to my Freelander I'd be absolutely furious.

This is yet another reason why I don't trust anyone except myself to do these things.

I would have no confidence in this garage at all.

The OP needs to check that they used the correct fluid never mind the temperature.

They should provide a courtesy car and do the whole job including the original work free.

This must be an independant garage - not a LR dealer / service dept. - surely.

Having said that - a main dealer put the wrong fluid in mine - a long time ago.

it means puling front off the box to relocate band but thats not the same thing as damaging box ,and thats the only bolt that lets something go when undone ,sometimes you actually have to look at what happens ,the only one i saw that had some damage the mechanic screwed bolt back in but wasnt in locater in the band but on a thicker part and it jammed band to hub ,but still only damaged the two items

Is it a long job to get the box off?

Yes and it's heavier than the manual box too at about 100Kgs. You don't want to remove the auto, unless you have to.
