Just joined the forum as is the best site Ive seen yet from scouring the net for tips and advice on maintaining my TD4 (BMW engine). I live in Dublin and so am constrained to just two service dealers listed as officially certified by Land Rover, one where I bought the freelander series 2, and who I would'nt trust with a push bicycle, the other ...no comment yet but a bit out of the way for servicing.

Anyway the main reason I'm here is to read as much advice as possible about a slow starting problem I'm having for a few weeks now, to try fix it, then report back what I learnt before bringing it to only available official service dealer.

Please forgive my ignorance with the many awfully silly questions I may ask, I am a complete beginner with working on engines! However since being made redundant as a building services engineer last year I cant afford the luxury of regular maintenance, plus as an engineer Ive always wanted to actually get to grips with 'engines'!

Since my starting problem Ive brought the TD4 to several local non-LR garages, they all pretty much recommended the same sequence with associated service charges:

1. Diesel and oil filter change:£150
2. Diesel pump change: £300
3. Diagnostic check (OBD2): £30
4. EGR valve clean: £180
5. They had no further options before carrying out 1-4.

So I read through these fora along with my haynes manual, completed all filter (diesel, oil, air) changes (when I went under rear right wheel to change diesel filter noticed it was hanging by a thread, dealer purchased TD4 from didnt even secure it following last service! It was a pig to change, but managed it, cost: £25 original LR Part);

But, still no joy.

Took off egr valve, was blocked to high heavens, cleaned it out now shinning, but did'nt reconnect the threaded tube from exhaust yet following advice online.

Still no joy.

Bought an OBD2 Elm327 bluetooth connector for £10 plus Rev for iphone app at £25, ran diagnostics, no error codes (tested on a mates car and returned error code he was aware of).

So next I'm going to clean the high pressure fuel sensor with silicon oil
which seems to have caused problems to others', BUT don't know the socket extension size to use to get at it under the engine manifold, anyone know? Looks a 24mm

I'll also clean the contacts using contact cleaner and buy the replacement direct cable loom for it when I save £50.

I'll also clean the MAF, and PCV and use millers injector cleaner to clean inside engine.

Then, well thats it, out of options if all else fails!?

Cheers for reading this more than detailed intro, just letting you guys know where I'm at and much appreciate all the posts that have helped me eliminate over £500 worth of service charges to date.

Its very satisfying to keep on top of maintenance, in a strange way I really enjoy getting my hands dirty and spending hours maintaining my land rover!

Welcome to the darkside . If you need a dealer ( independent ) try Mon 4x4 , there on Anglesey , 20 mins from Holyhead . Dont work there but he is a mate . And a good landrover only garage .

I am facinated by the diagnosis tool and iPhone ap you mention. Are you saying for this money I can run my own diognostics on my recently acquired Freelander (2003)? The answer seems to be yes. I will get them both. What fantastic information to come out of a group of Land Rover fans. Thank you.

Where did you get told its a series 2 ? Get to know your local motor factors and stay well clear of them robbin bastards Stewarts :mad: . As for your starting problem , have you whipped out the glow plugs and tested them ?

I drive a 98 Lseries FL.
 
Hi Irishwolf, glowplugs are fine as starts best in cold mornings though think I've finally solved it, took off cam sensor when hot, put in freezer, put back on hot engine started fine! Details in my thread slow starting td4...tbc when recieve the part.

Re: series 2, its on my reciept for my shining hard top sports model semi-automatic ...for princely sum of £25,000 ...I know complete rip off, though it was during the mad boom years 07!!!! Series 2 refers to the second edition of the freelander 1 released in 03. I didnt want a freelander 2 (series 1???) as no detachable roof option.

Gordon, yes is short answer, download rev from app store (30 quid) and should work with 'elm327 bluetooth obd2 dongle' though you may need roqy from cydia to connect the cheaper dongles, google it, and join the club of real time engine parameters as you drive!
