Sick 300tdi

Just done a head gasket job on my 300tdi disco inc new head as the original was cracked. got it started again it is now breathing really heavily like a steam train when you take the oil filler cap off and its also forcing fumes and oil out the breather filter on the side of the rocker cover. Also it belches out tonnes of black smoke from the exhaust to the point where you can't see bugger all in the rear view mirror!!!
Any advise on what could be wrong please before i get too ****ed off and set fire to it

Yep. Set the tappetts. Would that make it smoke and breath heavily though if they were not set correctly?

black smoke is excess fuel burnt in oxygen poor enviroment ,are all air pipes clear .not split ,black smoke on acceleration or all the time ?,how hot had it been ,hot enough for pistons damage ?

If it got roasted the pistons and rings may have suffered - have seen rings lose their 'tension' as I call it so they no longer push out against cylinder walls .
I put a new head on a friends 300 Tdi 2 yrs ago but I also fitted a new set of rings - Disco had 136K up at the time so I figured the rings would help .
Turned out a great success .

Taken head off today and piston nearest bulkhead has started to melt!!! Didn't notice it first time as piston was right down and couldn't see it. Doh!!!
Anyway i now have a 300tdi auto that I'm breaking for parts if anyone needs bits. I live in herne bay Kent( near Canterbury)
All parts available apart from engine
