rusty freelander

What problems (if any) have people had with rust on there freelanders?

My sills are looking a bit fragile. Passed MOT this year but definatly wont last untill next. I was thinking of patching them but it will look naff with all the lumps and bumps so perhaps passing on a few pound notes to me mate to replace and paint 2x new sills on.

The bottom of me fish tank may be the next culprit too. Although that wont matter for the MOT and the rear corner of the doors are starting to go.

Might be worth getting the old girl sandblasted and waxoiled to prevent it getting any worse and chucking some old engine oil down the doors.

Does anyone else have problems with rust yet or is it just because my freelander came from the depths of the fens where they dont have proper tarmac roads and so no-one washes there cars

2000 V plate 3 door.

Mine is 8 years old now, no rust on doors or sills etc.

Some surface stuff on the underside in parts but nothing that will trouble the MOT for many years.

Must be your's i guess. How old is it?

2003 td4, had her 7 years. no rust anywhere. little crap underneath i expect but thats protected by the mud, Only cleaned for a show or her birthday. Rest of time usual plastered in the chocolate tarmac.

must be the Fens and their 6 toes

mines 2000 so its 12 years old...maybe a sign of things to come for your cars?

mines 13 next month and I can't find any rust anywhere on her (barring a bit of surface stuff on underside components), LR did a good job in that respect.

never got rusty on my 2000 model but sills were protected by rock sliders.

my wife freelander is 13 years old and no rust on the sills a bit undernieth but not on the body only on things like subframe although the mot man said that the wishbones were getting a bit thin I have never heard of this before and the paint is still on them so how can they be

i have known of a wishbone snapping due to rust. The bloke used to have a large deep river with no barriers most of his way to work. If the wishbone snapped there he would have got wet. Luckily it snapped in his car park

Mine is 14 years old later this year and no sign of rust anywhere, had a good poke about last summer to check underside as well

Mine is a 2001, small amount of surface rust underneath, if I ever get more than 1 dry day, going to wire brush off and repaint.

sorry i ment he drove next to a river not through it. I would think the amount of rust was due to it being a 15 year old car that again, spent most of its time is the fens with all the mud and ****

Mine is 13 years with no rust not even on the underside

Never seen a rotten one yet, only small amounts of surface rust and I strip them down to the bare shell running a Freelander parts business.

Finally got my arse in gear and took piccys

Have similar rust on the tailgate but mine was due to the wiper blade/arm going too far and breaking through the paint. Rust on your sills looks due to external damage to the sills.

It looks like all of the pictures are of rust caused by external damage, like stone chips or catching/scraping panels. It should only be surface rust as opposed to rust through from the inside. If left long enough it will rust through. It's easier to treat/stop while it's only surface rust.

perhaps get the grinder out and some underseal for the sills. Dont really know what to do with the door though

i can not count my wifes freelander is 14 and a bit years old no rust on body work just bits underneith on things like tank holder
