Hi

I now looking for a freelander 1 what do I go for.

1 td4 and do all the mods.

2 V6 and go lpg.

I have around 5k to spend.

It will be mainly for a road car with a bit of off road fun.

Seen a 53 plate td4 premIum auto with the sports factory kit fitted for 4400
With 98k

And a 53 plate v6 premium manual for 4995 with 38k on the clock

Thanks lee

If you want it to last get a TD4 and they dont need any mods, just seviced properly. These prices seem a bit hefty though, you wont get much of a warranty on a 9 year old car so no big advantage paying over the odds from a dealer.

I have not long bought a 54 Reg. TD4 with FSH and never thought about looking at the petrol options. Despite the opinions of some of the Land Rover “purists” on here who believe that the Freelander should never have been produced, the TD4 FL1 is a much better option than most other £4-5k soft roaders I briefly considered.

Do a bit of research on the forum for the common problems as I did (There is so much info on here, if it ain’t listed, it doesn’t happen) but I don’t think you will be disappointed, even with the niggles.

You will get the occasional stupid problem with electrics, but if you buy one with a good service history the engine should be good for many miles over 100k. Mine has 112k and runs smooth as silk and I have read of others on here with 130k and more. A well looked after and good spec’d TD4 with 70-80k miles on a 05/55 plate should be available for around £5k.

When looking, check that all the electrics work, especially the windows, C/L , wiper parking position and especially my current problem, the back door micro switch.
Oh and…………….Good Luck:)

Td4, add a Ron Box, check the VCU and drive train regularly, make sure all the electrics work (including the sun roof, if fitted), check the turbo pipes.

Sit in it, enjoy :)

I know of folk with Rover 75s, with the same diesel engine, that have done over 200k miles and only ever had routine servicing on the engine so if it's had all its oil changes, with decent oil and filters, you don't have to worry about the engine, apart from the odd injector going that is :D

There are few K series owners that haven't suffered with head gasket failures, this includes the MG, Rover and Freelander. My Rover 75 blew the gasket twice even after all the various mods. If you're happy to either repair it yourself, or pay out for a garage to do the job, you can get a K series Freelander at a very reasonable price, personally I bought the TD4 even though I am a mechanic and could fix it myself, but who wants the bother.

I think that covers the Td4 vs 1.8 argument very neatly. Besides the engine they all have the same faults, if you can live with the risk of HGF the 1.8 is a very tempting item for the money :)

I still made the wife get the Td4 auto though ;) :)
