td4 misfire and smoke at 2000 rpm

Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone can answer my question, I have a 2004 freelander td4 sport which sometimes struggles to start from cold not all the time and when you rev it to 2000 rpm there is a slight misfire and plenty of blue/white smoke chucking out the exhaust, so far I have checked:-
Turbo all ok
Egr valve checked and cleaned all ok
Crankshaft filter replaced with a new one
Injectors all checked all ok
Turbo hoses all ok
All sensors checked all ok
Not faults reading on computer
Compression test all four cylinders read 300 psi
Changed glow plugs
Replaced some vacuum hoses
I have hit a brick wall I don't know what else to check, has anyone had this this problem and solved it,
I also discovered that it has a straight through exhaust with no cat could this contribute to the problem I don't know.

what about the egr or you have not over filled with oil have you it would not be turbo hoses as that problem puts out black smoke and as suggested but it would not be valve stemm oil seals they would not produce that problem sounds a bit like a timming issue
 
Fuel pressure sensor........check the contacts are clean, there was also a known issue with the wiring harness for this which was cured by retrofitting a new harness.
 
It means Landrover have a replacement harness you can buy and fit yourself..........it has been covered on here if you do a search.
As far as I know the maf doesnt show up when it goes out of spec, I assume the pressure sensor would, but it's well known for causing problems with dirty contacts.
How did you have your injectors tested?
 
Is the smoke predominently blue or white? I belive, (and wait to be corrected) that blue smoke from a diesel engine is burned engine oil which could (as you thought) be valve stem oil seals. I belive that white smoke is often unburned fuel getting into the exhaust.
 
you say you are having problems with getting it started, you dont mention how it runs once it has started and is up to tempreature?
the fact you are getting lots of smoke , is most likely due to the unburn fuel while trying to get it going ,
you say you have replaced the glow plugs, , is the relay working and are they getting power ?
always difficult to diagnose a problem from a distance, ,
the fact it hasnt a cat is a bounus it has no relevance to your problem , , as has already been suggested, the fuel rail sensor connector and the wireing to it is a good point to start, ,
my approach would be to stripp off the airbox and give it a good clean, this will let you see the wiring and connectors, while it is off ,examine the egr valve,(is it seating correctly) inspect all the vacuum hoses and the turbo hoses, reassemble giving everything a good looking at ,
another thing , if you are having problems starting , can you hear the electric fuel pump? try waiting 20 seconds or so , see if this helps , you could have a pump on its way out
 
Hi guys, the starting from cold is very unpredictable, sometimes it starts first time when standing for a day then another day it might take 5 or 6 attempts there is just no definate pattern its driving me nuts, I have taken all turbo pipes off and checked and cleaned replaced a lot of vacuum pipes all glow plugs are new and the Injectors were replaced with originals, this is why I asked about the oil seals its like to me when I let it stand for a day or two oil is dripping onto a piston making a glow plug wet which causes the starting problems and then the blue smoke which needs to be burnt off once done it drives perfect, I just don't get why it misfires at 2000 and chuckin out the blue smoke anything before or after 2000 rpm is fine.
 
I had a similar problem i took the oil filler cap off and it ran fine. Although my problem was slightly to much oil, if it clears after a while with the cap off you know its crankcase pressure related or oil being blown into the air inlet rather than seals and if not you can rule it out at least.
 
Ok guys how's about this, I left the landy standing for ten days went to start it yesterday morning dreading that it wouldn't start then boom she starts first time on the button, switched it off went in doors for a cuppa went to start it again and it took at least five attempts then started with loads of smoke, its got to be something simple, the starting of the vehicle is just way to random something is very sensitive under the bonnet that I can't find. What does everyone think? We will find it eventually.
 
fuel rail pressure sensor conection or camshaft sensor

what have you checked so far ?

maybe replace the camshaft sensor , at least it will elliminate that as a problem , and definatly check out the wireing to the fuel rail sensor,consider replacing the harness
 
I have had a diagnostic check done but didn't show any faults, I have checked all the filters there fine,because the starting patterns are so random I will look at the fuel rail sensor first and take it from there. Thanks guys.
 
I had a missfire at about 3k when i was reving from idle (when plugged into diagnostics) and i changed the long vacuum pipe (vacuum to turbo actuator) and now it is gone.
