At last I have got rid of the biggest pile of s h i t e I have ever had the misfortune to own.

This thing was a money pit , I'd advise anyone never to buy one.

In 18 months we spent over £1000 on repairs...

The last straw was when we had finally p/x'd it as a last resort and the fecking Master/Slave cable gave up the ghost £380 we had to pay out..

Whoever was the dickhead who designed a slave cylinder that fitted inside the bell housing unbelievable...

Hope whoever buys this at garage auction has more luck than us .. God help them..:mad::mad::mad:

Pick a lemon, then? Sounds like you bought the whole orchard!! :)
Did you own it for long? Or were you unfortunate enough to buy it just as the clutch components failed?

So you bought it in 2010, when you first posted. Then you had tons of trouble with it and you didn't ask us for any advice in two years? We coulda saved you alot of dosh pal :(.

I don't disagree though, the Freelander can be a money pit. I'm almost tempted to say that the DIY enthusiasts are the only ones who can affordably keep one. Though once you've done the work it should be alright. I know I could never afford to pay someone else to do the work mine has needed. Not everyone has the time for DIY but I sure as **** don't have the money for garages. If it's an old one, you'll be spending quite a bit in garages and for that money you may as well buy an FL2 or summin Japanese.

I'd agree Will

Luckily I'm handy with tools, so will have a go at most jobs, and because it isn't crucial that the FL is running in order for me to do trips anywhere, I guess it makes it less of a burden.

But................ if it is your only mode of transport, then I could understand your frustration. I was lucky, I managed to pick up a FL for a relative bargain, as the previous owner just wanted it out of his view, and having chucked a few hundred quid at it, it now runs sweet. But I am waiting for that first "Big Fail"............... when it comes, I'll deal with it. ;)

I'm in the exact same situation mate, even down to how I got mine! I walk to work so I don't desperately need it at all times. Mine has just blown another Head Gasket but that was de to really shoddy work by whoever did the last one - I have the bill from the previous owner and they charged him for stuff they didn't even do, like skimming the head. No wonder it bust again.

But if I can do the HG then there's very little I wouldn't have a go at. As an enthusiasts 4x4 they're pretty hard to beat in terms of enjoyment and value for money. But definitely wouldn't reccomend one to someone who needed a daily runner that never goes wrong - get a Yarris or something.

Was just talking to someone who bought a 06 Fl1 Td4 from new , owned it 6 years and has never had a single warning light on, breakdown or fault.

I'm doubtful he will have the same luck with the FL2 he just bought though ! But goodluck to him :)

Probably takes good care of it though :). When they're cared for according to the manual and common sense they will be fine apart from wear and tear items. But people don't read manuals and blissfully believe that cars run on magic and aren't horribly complicated feats of mechanical engineering that took the best part of a century to develop. Magic carpets need no maintainance, so they owner naturally assumes the same goes for vehicles. And then he eats his own shoes for dinner.

That's why we have some 1.8's with 150k on the clock what have never got HGF, then we hear about ones that had four injuns in as many years under warranty.

Gah I dispair I really do.

PS: OP I wasn't having a go or nuffink, you probably got yours when most of the damage was already done, like I did. Unless you do enjoy casseroled footwear?

My FL1 Td4 is from oct. 2005. I bought when it was 3 years old. Serviced it well and never had any problems with it. But now it is over 214.000km the last month I spend about euro 3.650,-on it including an all over check up and renewal off all oils, filters etc. etc.

My wife, usually a part time war minister, even says that I shouldn't complain because these are the first things we had to fix since we own it.

4 new injectors
1 reconditoned HP Fuel pump
4 new glowplugs
a new clutch
and the all over service maintenace (don't know the correct English word for it) with all oils, filters, check up etc. etc.

I hope I can go now for another 4 year. (knock knock)

214 000km whats that in miles , mines same age as yours with 62 ,000 miles !

About 133,000 miles. 1.6k is 1 mile.
I also think he will do oil changes more than every 4 years.

Mine has had its problems and issues but I've stuck with it. I have a good car, just need to get its engine issue sorted.

You only do oil and filter changes every 4 years ?

No, no, don't get me wrong. As I wrote I serviced it well. Every 20.000km normal maintenace. Every 40.000km there is large maintenance.

I was talking about the big repairs for Euro 3.650,-- = about GBP 2.920,-- included the large maintenace where all the oils etc. were included in that amount of money.
I hope to survive the next 4 years without large extra costs of repairs.

Maintenance are normal costs which you have to make for every other car.

Regarding the km and miles:
"1.632Km = 1 mile. So divide Km's by 1.632 to give miles". = according to Hippo. So that would make 131.127miles.

Oh, and I don't spare the car. Big caravan towing for holiday. Next heading for Croatia at the end of the week. And I go off road and drive roadbooks with it.

Just popped back in for a review..

Thanks for the comments.

We had the car regularly serviced at a local garage.

ECU light came on when we ran out of diesel , had it looked at by Greens in Haverfordwest (Main Dealers) and the couldn't sort it so drove with it on ever since.(common fault apparantly). Fuel gauge was showing 1/3rd full ...

Changed the Camshaft detector myself , changed the in tank petrol pump myself.(Thanks for posts in here)

Had new waterpump fitted by garage. Had brake discs changed by garage and clutch cable changed by them also..

Should have been put off by all the receipts the previous owner had left in service manual, but thort what else could go wrong..
