Are all auto boxes the same? Newbie Question

Bare with me hear but I have a P38 in need of a new Gearbox.
If I am correct I have a 98 2.5 Diesel box with the Model Number of - ZF 4HP22.
If that is true would a box from an XJ6 with the same code work with the Range Rover or am I missing something here?

I'm not aware that an XJ6 has a transfer box hung off the rear of the autobox. I'd be surprised if it were physically the same. James Martin or Bemble might know for certain, you could PM them.
Plenty of used ZF4HP22e P38 boxes available, try Emmotts or Ebay.
If you are keeping the car long term your best bet would be an exchange unit from the likes of Ashcroft Transmissions with a warranty.

Yeah, believe me, swapping these mothers out is something you only want to do once!

zf hp22 boxes tend to use the same internals over a long period of time but rear housing /rear shaft would be different for non 4x4 parts could be swapped but not without total strip down
