I have quite a whine frome my transmission but cant decide where its coming from. its either from the diffs or the transfer box. There seems to be quite alot of backlash if i grap hold of the drive shaft with the handbrake off and there is cluncks coming both the diff and the transfer box end. How can i tell where the wear is or is it likely to be both ends?

Simon

feel for endfloat on diff flanges (should be none )remove one prop at a time and yest run in diff lock ,check oils for level and debris/contamination

Hi Simon I had a TDi 300 that whined when I first bought it and the cause was................................no oil in the transfer box!!!!

So before you go any further, I would strongly advise you to check the oil levels in both diffs, the main gearbox and the transfer gearbox.

Its been a while now since I sorted mine out but I think I did something like lift a front wheel and rotate it back and forth with my hand on the prop so it didn't move. Note the amount of wheel movement. Then I did the same at the back. Front had more movement so that is the one I replaced first and it did the trick.

I could also feel the end float as JM says although I only now really put that name to it. If I rotated the front wheel backwards as far as it would go and then rotated the PROP to turn that wheel forward, it would come to a stop but with more pressure the prop would move again without any tyre movement.

If your Disco is an old one it may have worn output gear shaft splines too (input gear of the Tbox ). Mine was so I put a new later design gear in which engages with some unused parts of the shaft's spline.

These two fixes transformed my motor. Not sure for how long though.

Thanks for the replys guys. Changed the t/box oil and that was very dirty and had a few metal bits attached to the plug. Also checked the diff levels as the rear has a really small pin hole but never run dry afaik. Managed to pick up a new pan at the bath and west show, so will pull the diff when i fit that and give it a good looking over. Also have to do a swivel ball, so will do the same to the front when i do that. Also on the way to the show i took alot more notice of the noises coming from the transmission and there is a very noticable knock coming from the transfer box area when coming on or off the throttle. Prob made a bit more noticable by towing the caravan..

Hi Simon, that knocking noise is very often caused by a worn ball-joint on the rear suspension A-frame. Cheap part but a bit of a sod to get the old one off sometimes.

Cheers

Just another thing to check then. Have also got a full set of std bushes to go into it which i might as well do when i look at that. It seems to be a case of fix the loadest noise first and work back!!!:D
