Hi I have a 2003 freelander, only had it since feb.... It sounds like a moped in me engine when revs drop as slowing down - only started tonight, I changed down gears n this vibrating, grinding noise came out of me engine, bit like when u crunch the gears... Cheers bex.

Is there anyone who knows what this could be? Sounds like when u using a Jake break on a lorry!

Need a better description. What engine? What mileage? Does it do it in all gears at all revs - hi/low revs + under acceleration? Does it happen when cold or hot? Does it stop the car moving or slow It down? Do you feel a vibration? Does it do it as you steer from side to side? Does breaking have an effect?

I've got a horrible feeling that you've answered your own question mentioning the Jake brake. I'd agree with Garry and have a careful look at your turbo.

Look up the back of the car for spots of oil, that's usually an indication of a knackered turbo cos it spits it out the exhaust! Not always tho!

Cheers for your replies, it's a 2ltr, 95,000 it only made the noise after I changed down from 5th to 4th and then from 4th to 3rd....
I have been out today n no noise but was taking it easy n approaching roundabouts more slowly :p I got the car from a landy dealer in feb so should still have warranty - if not how much is a turbo du know?
One more question why do people call um gaylanders? R vey not liked then or is that a stupid question :lalala:

Because any man who drives one is a homosexual hair dresser, or so the big butch homophobic men who drive Defenders and Discos believe.

i had a sound like that like a moped no crunching though and I know you are going to laugh but it turned out to be-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------my front tyres and I still do not know why but since changing tyre problem never came back hope this help now I own a scratched pannels freelander but I got the bloke who did it police are going around to see him

Have a look at your clutch slave cylinder bracket . Before mine broke I thought was going to have to shortly renew the clutch itself .My clutch all of a sudden one day would fail when I was changing gear .It happened one evening as I got into a filling station and thought to have a look at slave bracket and it looked ok .Got back n pressed the peddle and ............................. .

Might be worth inspecting your slave bracket .
