P38 4.6 on lpg

Here comes paranoia. Started Rangy yesterday, HMMM that's a bit smoky-pale blue. It's used the bit of water, no oil as usual. Looked like a bit of condensation in the oil filler cap, not mayo. After 40 odd miles filler cap dry, water ok, still hint of smoke, no overheat, no loss of power. Am I just losing it or do I investigate slipped liner/headgasket/valve stem oil seals?

Hi there, funny as i just started a thread on p38 paranoia. I have a 4.6 on LPG & i notice more smoke on start up on colder mornings (the last few days have been colder than usual). Are you losing much coolant? When i got mine i topped the coolent level up to the mark & was horrified when after about 100 miles it was back down to 2" off the bottom of the expansion tank. It did this after a few more top ups, however it doesn't go any lower than this so i think it might be something to do with coolent in the LPG system. Now I just keep an eye on level & check for any leaks elseware.

Mine did exactly that after it was converted, but uses about a pint every 1000 miles or so. It's always used about that much, so have my previous 2 rangies. It was the condensation in the oil filler cap along with the smoke that set me away (it is a p38 after all). I think I'm am just paranoid, but my mechanic brother sucked air thru his teeth ( the way they do) and muttered head gasket, valve stem oil seals, slipped liners and said you would buy a rangy (he's had 2 and 2 freelanders).

Best option i think is just to keep a check on fluids. I guess the condensation could be the cold weather / used on short journeys. Whats the oil like on the dip stick?

Typical v8-up to the mark, bit dirty, no sign of mayo. Surprisingly it hardly uses any oil, and the speedo says 120000m. It's whisper quiet, no rattles and really smooth.

Mine doesnt get through oil either, on 107000 now. Mine is very quiet - thinking of putting in a stainless exhaust to get a bit more v8 rumble

the exhaust gasses on an lpg vehicle are mostly water vapour so on cold mornings, you are likely to notice smoke from the pipes. i have a rangie classic lse on lpg that uses a small amount of water. i cant find any leaks and i replaced the head gaskets and inspected the liners last year. its possible that the water leaks into the gas inside the vaporiser slightly and then is burnt by the engine.

I feel better now-the sun has come out! If you're getting a new exhaust, get someone else to fit it, the amount of rust that you'll get in your eyes is unreal.

Yep, mine looks like its the original system judging by the fact there's more rust than metal there. I think i'll hand over the parts to my local garage & let them do the honours cheers
