hello all i have a 4.6 V8 in my range rover that i have just finished rebuilding but i think i have made a mistake because i am not getting any oil pumped anyway. i think i have put the oil pump relief valve and the one above it in the wrong way round i have look throw the book witch is no help and i did find this pic

but i still dont no what way there go ? could some one tell me witch one gose at the top and witch gose at the bottom and also are the springs the same if not what one is what.
Many thanks

did you prime the pump before fitting?
will check tomorrow
you have fitted the gears the right way round?

i didn't put any Vaseline in it just some oil when i assembled it but i have been reading tonight that i should take the plug out and run the engine on the starter motor till the oil light goes off is that right ?

hi i still really need to no what way this gose? i have primed it with oil and run it but still nothing not even a drop out the bottom hose that is the out to the oil cooler so im looking at having to take it all apart again and i really don't have time to take the sump off and the front cover with the engine in so any help would be most welcome

hello and thanks for the replys i have read the instruction for reassembly

1. Lubricate rotors, oil pump drive gear, cover

plate and housing with engine oil.
2. Assemble rotors and drive gear in housing
ensuring that reference marks are aligned.
3. Position cover plate to housing.
4. Apply Loctite 222 to threads of cover plate
screws and bolt.
5. Fit cover plate screws and bolt and tighten to:-
Screws - 4 Nm (3 lbf.ft)
Bolt - 8 Nm (6 lbf.ft)
6. Fit timing cover.

and no where dues it say anything about Vaseline or petroleum jelly
there is only one use fall pic on page 21 top right it dues not clearly show what oil release valve goes where ? and it only mentions one when as in the pic i put up first there is two piston units could some one please tell me witch set of springs and valves and tube goes with what holes there are too top and bottom and there both fit in both

after i have confirmed that the pistons are right then i will look at the job of taking it all apart again to look for other resins why it isn't pumping i have already filled the oil filter and taken the oil presser switch out and filled that up with oil but its still dry at the bottom.
i have been on some other pages looking up the same problem and there all say that the 4.6 oil pump is self priming and the Vaseline thing is ment for the 3.9/4.0lt but if i cant get it going any other way i will try it

thanks for your continuing help

The spring with the sleeve in it goes to the top hole, this is the one above where the filter screws on and it's passage goes down and out the oil cooler pipe on the bottom of the cover, the none sleeved one goes in the lower hole on opposite side where the filter screws on ,under the crank shaft oil seal, hope this helps,I am in the process of rebuilding my 4.6 gems engine ,and cleaning all the parts up too,I was also wondering if you had to put Vaseline in the pump like the old engines,so think I will do it to be on the safe side during rebuild

thank you so so much are the springs the same sizes ? and yea do Vaseline it as i now have to take it apart with the engine in to do it.

Both springs are same size and feel the same pressure,so should be ok there,by the looks of it the sleeve is only there to limit how far the piston moves up the chamber, was it new oil pump gears that you installed?

you can put the vasaline in through the pressure switch hole which a cake icing back while turning the engine over in short bursts if you dont have to take the pump apart for other reasons

hi yes it was a new pump but still did not pump at all i have filled the oil switch hole with oil till it poured out but still no luck, will try Vaseline next

easier way to prime the bump is push oil in though the oil pressure switch turning the engine backwards

I never vasaline the newer rotary pump but prime it with oil when rebuilding to save time and prolonged cranking on a dry engine.
In the case of the land rover manual it would be taught at the training course in the case of the Haynes manual they now have a liability issue thus the quality of the manuals have dropped over the last 10 years
