ive just finished installing my winch on my 90, its a warn 9.5xp with a albright solenoid in the engine bay. yesterday when i was winching i was pressing the winch in button on my controller and nothing was happening, no winch movement and no clicking from the solenoid, after 4-5 times pressing the button the winch kicked in but it continued to do this until in the end no matter how many times i pressed the button on the controller it would not wind in, if i changed the spade connectors over on the solenoid for the in/out it would pull in on the other button on the controller no problem atall so i believe the winch is not too blame, my question is does this sound like a problem with the solenoid terminals or the controller? and how would i go about checking which is the cause?

Yeh, which is what I have as well, but they are inside the bridge housing so to speak, I'd put it down to damp on the connectors rather than inside the solenoid, causing a short maybe? Dunno, just know WD40 and warming it up worked a treat!
doesnt matter where u mount them they are waterproof and selaed,mine used to be on the front of me 90 by the rad and regulary got dunked and coverd in mud and were never a problem

i always leave them exsposed
 
I had the same problem last month and was daft enough to assume that it was a broken solenoid. I bought a replacement solenoid without properly testing the existing ones, only to discover that it made no difference.

The problem turned out to be the controller button contacts, which is definitely worth checking first. Here's the 15 min fix:
  1. Unscrew the controller housing.
  2. Dismantle the button assembly.
  3. Now check the condition of the metal on both the button strip and where it makes contact with the strip connected to the wires. If any part isn't shiny, then give it a once over with some wire wool. You might want to add some sort of fluid to slow the corrosion again, perhaps vas, although don't quote me on that.
  4. Whilst the controller is dismantled, you could do a quick multimeter continuity/resistance test to make sure all the wires are trouble free too.
  5. Reassemble, plugin and test.

cheers mate very helpful, i have one of the new controllers with the built in light and cant work out for the life of me how to open it up?
