Hi all.
Had our freelander for about six years now with very little problems.
Only recently started to tow our caravan with it, and while it tows fine, it really seems to struggle on any kind of hill.
Was thinking of getting either a remap or tuning box.
Would appreciate any advice on these options.
Also I'm not the best with a spanner, so I would be looking for someone with a good reputation ideally in Fife to carry out work.
Cheers :)

Hi Jock, and welcome.

If it's a diesel there's several simple cheap mods to do to make sure it's working at peak efficiency.

EGR by-pass and pcv update.

The Synergy is not so cheap, but it will transform the TD4, and it can be adjustable by an optional switch on the dash.

Have a good read and come back with any questions, mate.

Cheers,

Singvogel.

If it's a diesel, when did anyone last clean out the EGR?

Before you spend any money at all, it's worth taking that off and spending half an hour cleaning out thoroughly, it's also worth checking out the MAF.

With a clean EGR, or a bypass, and the PCV update mentioned above you may have enough benefit, and for only about £20 and an hour's graft :)

The synergy is brilliant by they way, totally transformed my engine performance :)

I'd agree with this, I don't know if it's the case with Freelanders, but with Discos it's always worth cleaning the intercooler as well.
My Freelander is much better on the hills towing my caravan than the Disco ever was. How heavy is your caravan?

as a couple of others have suggested, with td4 freelanders (and most other common rail diesels) once you notice they are struggling under load going uphill its a sure sign that the maf is at the end of its life. these are around 250 quid for a genuine bosch one and although you will read many a post on here running down 'cheap copies' i've just discovered that mine has a cheapo one fitted by the garage i bought it from and, touching a massive piece of oak sideboard, it has been, and still is, working perfectly well.....

Another cause of struggling under load, i.e. on hills and at motorway speeds can be a loose hose on the EGR valve.

I initially had a duff MAF, very slow to pick up at low speeds below 3k rpm, scary pulling out on junctions or roundabouts. Up hills and under load I was lucky to get 50 mph. I ran without the MAF for a short while, a lot better but still far from right.

I then fitted a new Pierburgh MAF and Synergy 2. Noticeably quicker pick up at the bottom end but the same sort of issues up hills and under load. Wondered if I'd connected things up incorrectly but then noticed the hose to my EGR bypass wasn't tight. A new clamp and the car has been transformed, sounds much smoother and goes like a rocket

Thanks for all the help guys. Sounds like I've got a bit or research to do. It is a td4 btw.
I think a guy at work has a synergy on his rover 75, so will also quiz him.
I realise it maybe fairly straight forward to do, but where would you recommend to get the work done in either fife, or if further afield central Scotland.
Also is there any benefit in getting a custom remap done ?
A mate has just had one done on his Audi and says its amazing, maybe a pricier though ?
Cheers again. :)

with a remap you have it for power or eco or both or just eco with a synergy box you can pick and choose what you want and it can be removed and sold on if you want and its half the cost and as for fitting dead easy plug and play

If you decide on a Synergy2a+ (that's the one that takes the optional dash switch) it is unbelievably simple to fit yourself.

There are only 2 plugs to take out / change over and the cables to tie in.

The beauty is there is nothing permanently changed and it can be removed when you come to sell the car on.

Ask you Rover pal how difficult it was.

I looked at all the options and found nothing to compare.

Good luck.

The synergy will come with nice clear fitting instructions, it's really very simple, so simple it took me about 45 minutes to fit mine to my Rover 75, because I double and triple checked everything looking for the mistake I'd made  :)

Which, if you read all the link disco_mikey posted shows that they are not going to become illegal, so don't worry!

Mine had its MOT a couple of weeks ago (EGR removed and Synergy box - not a problem).

Tuning boxes are to become illegal...

On another note, Strathearn Engineering are local(ish) to you, just south of Perth. They are doing a special on Re-Maps just now, and says they include Freelander 1 TD4's...

My God that link is 15 months old!!!!!!

For the truth rather than the scary rumours of over a year ago see the actual current new MOT testers manual.
