Which prop-shaft bearings?

Today I went to see my local independent 4X4 mechanics in their little workshop.

Very knowledgeable and helpful they were too. :D

All 4 wheels off the ground, engine running and the wheels turning - I can't do that on my drive!

They diagnosed that what I thought was a noisy wheel-bearing, was in fact the front prop-shaft bearing.

So now I'm going to replace both of the bearings, asap.

But which to buy? I've just read most of the huge number of threads and posts on the subject, but I'm confused as to which bearings to get.

I've had a look on eBay and there are Britpart, GKN, and loads of others I've never heard of. :confused:

Plus I can't sort out the part numbers.

What is the difference between TOQ000010, TOQ000040G, TOQ000060, etc.?

Who should I buy them from? Any to avoid?

Useful comments will be welcomed. ;)

Burning suggestions will be ignored, as usual. :flame:

Cheers, Singvogel. :cool:

Good God! :eek:

Guy Salmon - Genuine LR dealer wants £70 + postage for ONE. :eek:

Another eBay seller can do a pair for £29.85 with free postage.

Can there really be this much difference / range of quality?

How about £84.99 for a pair with 2 years warranty?

I'm not going to buy the super expensive ones, but I don't want to be doing this job again in 3 months time.

Who's selling reliable kit?

Who has experience of these, please?

S.

GKN are what landrover use and sell we use gkn on the farm u pay for what u get britpat wont last well not if u use your landerovers like we do ok if u popping around on tarmac to shops alday like most cheap wont last

I'd go for the GKN if you couldn't get NSK or FAG.

I dunno about the VCU bearings, but I do know that those make very good bearings for every other purpose I've had to buy them for, work, motorcycles and cars :)

I paid £50 each for mine,genuine GKN
You may find that they have FAG bearings in them as did mine.

Island 4x4 sell them,£38.33 each plus Vat.

I was told its the G on the end of the part no that is important but I can`t remember why.
Something to do with either GKN or genuine part.

i'm a newbie to freelander ownership ..
bought an 06 freelander van td4 ( 37k ) .. couple of weeks ago ..
first thing i did was take it to the local LR dealership in bradford .. and had a full service as if starting from
scratch .. .. vcu support bearings were replaced as a precaution due to splitting on the
rubber surrounds .. .. a rear diff. mount was also replaced ..

re the vcu support bearings ..
the invoice reads :
LTOQ000040 .. .. .. .. 045966 (T) bearing .. £77.79 each

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
next in line .. an EGR delete .. aquired but yet to mount ..
and a phone call to rover ron for one of his magic boxs :)
( that's after extensive research regarding the competitors )
~~~~~~~~~~~~

gotta say .. even in stock mode .. the vehicle is a joy to drive :)))

'n many thanx to the folks on this site for All the worthwhile information

Hi,

Thanks for your advice guys.

Made a couple of phone calls this morning, and have ordered the GKN ones from Foundry 4X4 which right enough have FAG bearings in them. :D

Very helpful. They unwrapped them to read what was stamped on the actual bearing.

£32 + postage for a pair - That's a bargain. :)

Hopefully this will fix the whine - I'll report back next week after I've had a chance fit them.

Caio,

Look forward to seeing if this sorted your whine, i have a similar whine so if it sorts yours, then i'll buy the bearings as well.

My local specialist mechanics diagnosed the bearings yesterday using a stethoscope.

They then took out the 4 bolts holding the prop bearings, (they were pretty difficult to get out due to corrosion) and while supporting the VCU, lowered it just enough to be able to spin the whole prop mount on the shaft, if you follow me.

The front bearing was noisy and had a bit of play. The rear one was quieter but had a tiny bit of play.

They should of course be completely silent with no play.

After reading Hippo's thread about the problems he had changing his mounts, I'm now preparing to do battle with getting the shafts off the VCU, or should I say the VCU off the shafts. I need to borrow some pullers.

Will def report back.

Caio, Singvogel.

How the saga ends -

Monday: Noise diagnosed as prop-shaft support bearings.
Tuesday: 2 new GKN supports with FAG bearings ordered from Foundry4X4 - £39.50 inc. delivery.
Wednesday: Bearings arrive!
Thursday: Decide splines on VCU too corroded and 'stuck' for me to remove.
Friday: Bearings fitted at local specialist. Time taken - under 2 hours.

Outstanding service from Foundry4X4 at an amazing low price, and great work by a little three-man independent local garage-workshop specialist.

Result: noise has gone - I can listen to the radio at lower volume again - only sound to cover now is slight tyre noise.

Now only got to fix the 'non-heating' heated rear screen.
