Iam contemplating getting my td5 chipped. Will I notice a difference in performance and mpg etc? I know the sites that advertise these state you do but they are bound to say that so you buy them in the first place. Also are the chips in the td5 soldered in or are they easily removable?

depends on the year of it pre-03 up to 2002 is a 10p engine and will need either a plug in box or soldered , post 03 is flashable (should be not detectable even to LR stealerships dino's.

I have a 04 td5 disco and after reading all the various advice on here and other forums I chose to go the remap way. Mainly because some people with the chips have had problems with cracked manifolds due to heat build up. Someone please correct me if I am wrong here.
My main reason to get this done was lack of power on initial set of with my caravan on the back (yes it is a big one) until the turbo kicked in. This sometimes left me in dangerous situations, especially when pulling out on busy roundabouts. Since the remap it has a lot more lower end grunt along with a smother distribution of power throughout the rev range. Economy wise no different really I mainly drive in traffic and average between 25-28mpg although on a run this would almost certainly improve it just never gets one without the caravan on the back.
I have two friends who both went down the chip route with the idea that they could always sell the chip if they got rid of the car. One has had a cracked manifold after about 12 months of fitting it. The second although touch wood his manifold is still in one piece admits the delivery of power from mine is far better than his with the chip.
A remap is a more expensive option but I would always go this way. My disco is my pride and joy I got it remapped for safety reasons ref towing and acceleration issues and I am more than happy with it. one way of getting this a bit cheaper is to do what I did and wait for one of the main Landrover shows where the guys who do this normally have trade stands and normally offer a show discount.
Just think long and hard before you go down the chip route and do a bit more reading on sites like this as they are an invaluable source of wisdom and experience.

i think your confusing a chip with a plug in power box, a chip is a re map but eary td5 ecu's were;nt flashable so the chip inside is un soldered and a new map loaded onto a new chip which is then re soldered back into the ecu, the results are as good as a flashable map, dependent who does the work, mike at dynachip did mine and a load of others on hear, try searching, and its a whole lot less cost wise than some of the big companies

Mike at Dynachip also did mine. I am happy with the power gains, it certainly seems to have lost that flat spot feeling when pulling out onto round-a-bouts. I have to be honest though and say that I have not seen any improvement in fuel economy, still lucky if I get 400 miles to a tank.

Mike from Dynachip did my 2002 auto TD5 and the difference was noticeable and all positive.

Better power delivery from low down so better towing and climbing long hills. It's particularly useful on an auto as it helps with the autobox staying in 4th gear lock-up on long hills.
He does all TD5's - the earlier ones he has to solder in a new chip, the later ones are remapped via the OBD socket.

Mine cost £225 and it's the best money I EVER spent on a car.

Nuff said

I get 500 to a tank now and it's not chipped. :)

Where is this dynochip located? Can anyone recommend anyone decent in Scotland?

he travels the country fitting the remaps, normally when a few from certian parts of the country book he will do them all on same day to make the travel worthwhile, give him a call he's a nice chap

He done my 90 as it is a 2001 and needed a chip soldering in. he brought one already done and took my old one away ,which he will chip and use for another vehicle. easier for him to solder in his workshop than doing it on someones drive. he charged me 250 because he had to supply the chip. nothing but praise, nice guy, on time ,loads more power. don't check fuel consumption,

If you don't want to travel and can cope without the car for a couple of days Gary at Alive Tuning can remap the ECU if you send it to him, check on the website but I'm sure it only take a couple of days.
He done mine when I was done near him on holiday, and have since fitted his straight through exhaust. If I'm careful I can get over 550 miles out of a full tank but then it is fun to use the extra power now and again and towing is so much easier.

Well was supposed to get the discovery chipped this week by dynochip as he said he was coming to Scotland but tried to contact him countless times to get day/time as upto now no reply so dunno what's going on. Is there no-one that does them up in Scotland? A previous post suggested sending my ecu to alive but not sure if iam keen about sending it away to get it back chipped.
