Went to HALFORDS yesterday to get my battery checked (but not buy one)...It's running at 39% according to the hand held BOSCH thing.

So, I need a new one.... I have heard lots about the Numax CVX-X...Apparently its cca1000, and 85a/h. £65 + vat and delivery (£8.00)
The best one I can get locally is 640cca, 70a/h for £70.00 (Local motor factor)

Is it possible the Numax is 'over the top'? loads of paople using them (some have 2 for split charge!)

Tim Fry Landrovers in Cheltanham just replaced my Disco 1 battery with a 560cca battery and in the cold weather it barely turns the engine! They reckon it's my glow plugs saying this is the properly specced battery for the vehicle. would say the bigger the cca the better.

I agree with Jonathan,

Basically the larger the numbers the more you need that battery. CCA (cold cranking amps) and AH ( amp hours) are important, but also consider whether it's classed as a starting battery or deep cycle (deep cycle probably more suited for powering a winch or as a second battery).

Also, you will need to check if the battery will actually fit in your Discovery, just go outside with a tape measure and measure your existing battery and the space round it.

Personally, my Discovery 2 petrol looks like it needs a new battery (could be something to do with the cold weather:() and I'm considering an Alphaline 1000cca / 130 ah for just under £100 delivered with 4 years warranty. Just need to get my tape measure out to see if it will fit:D

Having gone through the which battery to get ??????? The only one worth getting ( Non gel type ) is the 85 amp hour Bosh,Fitted one to my 2 transits and last autumn my disco 2.The worst battery,s Ive ever had was Newmax as on sub zero mornings they never started the transits or my disco. So annoying,OK some will say best since sliced bread but i speak as i found 2 years ago 3 new newmax 3 vehicles that would not start.

Last year I was in a fix so I bought a Halfords battery to suit my 300 tdi.
It has been superb.
Batteries do like to be charged on a charger now and again - even if they are in a motor that gets used every day. The cold and the high draw at this time of the year knock them about a bit.

Stu-rox
How did you get the battery to fit the tray.
at 330mm long it would be pushing the aircon pipes out of the way to fit.
I agree biggest CCA is the answer

cheers

The biggest battery u can fit without altering the a/c pipes on the right and a wiring loom on the left is something like this one which I fitted last year although I had to reposition forward the front clamp fixing post.

It's has 610cca, the standard battery fitted to a D1 by the factory was 580cca, all you want to do is to start the vehicle after all. If you expect to have a problem starting then go for a higher cca.

Well I haven't had any problems with mine, and its been in for around 18 months, and started fine when it was -10 and below

Willing to be corrected by anyone who's are in automotive battery field, but as far as I know they are the French equivalent to British Lucas or the German Bosch.

Mine's nearly 18 months old as well, it replaced a 9 year Lucas battery so time will tell if Alphaline are any good. My discos original LR battery lasted only 4 years.:(

The Halfords calcium battery on mine is starting to look a little ill although it isn't pushing up the daisies yet... Mine is a 3.9 with aircon and a winch so would like to go to a twin battery setup, I've posted in other topics but still haven't decided what to go for. I had hoped I could just buy one battery to make the twin setup but it now looks like 2 new ones are needed :(

How do the glow plugs effect how quick the starter turns the engine ???? It may well be the right rating for the car but you can never have too big a battery (as long as it physically fits)
