Defender TD5 Fuel Pump (tank)

It's looking like my tank pump is dead. It did the squealing like a pig impression this morning then after about 400 yards she died a death..

A couple of questions before i look at changing it..

Now with the ignition on the pump does the pig squeal constantly as if it's not getting up to pressure. Iv'e not looked at the filter yet and it was changed about 6k miles ago so ready for a new one anyway. Would the pump keep running if the filter was blocked??

I will change the filter as a matter of course anyway, but if it is the pump what is the best way to get it out? I'm guessing it's a fuel tank off job on a 90?

If so I think I may be tempted to make an inspection cover in the rear tub..

if you remove tank to do it undo filter drain bung and let pump empty most of the fuel out first

Quickest easiest way to get fuel pump out is to cut access panel in floor above tank. If you can't find instructions for where to cut I will go and measure my access panel for you.

My pump was replaced 3m ago. I think i can always hear it running whilst I wait for the glow plug light to go out before starting but I wouldn't say it squeals.

I have heard of cases of the pumps being full of crud due apparantly due to 5% biodiesel in all diesel nowadays so may be possible to lift out of tank and clean off?

I think putting an inspection cover in is a good option, Makes it easier for the future too. I'm hoping to do it Sat morning so if you could check the possition of yours it would be greatly appreciated

I gave the fuel tank a few good kicks after the pump stopped working. Might not be the right way to do it, but it's been working ever since and worth a try.

Cheers for that Shifty, the measurements are spot on

I got it removed today and got a second hand one in that a mate had lying around. It sounded much better with the new one but soon found out that it was kaput!:doh: Where one of the pipes goes in it seems that there is an insert missing The bore is too big on diameter and Diesel pours out:doh:

New pump next then fingers crossed!!

Glad it was of use. Beware of buying the cheapo pumps on eBay. Most of them dont last too long.

Was looking at a Bearmach one. Not the cheapest but not the price of main stealer either. Unless anyone can tell me otherwise??

I've never had trouble with Bearmach parts.

I fitted a Bearmach pump... through the floor... must be over 18 months ago now... it does make a bit more noise than the genuine one did before if packed up... but so far still going well... and cheaper than genuine.

Pump fitted and she's running again. Paid £100 for the pump and collected it on their day off. Can't say fairer than that. Happy chappy!!
