TD5 Judder After 20 Minutes

My wife has a 02 TD5 Manual Lanny.

This week it developed a number of symptoms relating to maybe one or or faults. The symptoms are:

After starting the engine (starts on the button, no problem there) and driving for around 20 minutes the car looses all power and struggles to keep up in traffic.

It also starts to judder.

As the car was due an Oil change I took the opportunity to change the oil, oil filters (filter & rotor) air filter.

I also changed the MAF Sensor as I suspected that was the problem, as the air filter was badly fitted by its previous owner. It had a small gap and that had allowed some small particles in to the MAP Sensor and get caught on the mesh.

Now the car runs much better, although at around when warmed up (after 20 minutes), at 50 - 60 MPH it starts to judder and looses power. Taking your foot off the accelerator seems to have an effect, but mainly just slowing it down...... Its like you've left the hand brake on, but only 50 - 60mph (not tried it any faster). The brakes aren't binding either.

If you start the engine from cold, then after a minute or two accelerate to 50 - 60 all is well, no problem

So I am guessing maybe something to do with engine temparature & fuel supply ?

Any ideas ? Another sensor....which one ?

What else could it be?

Hello
I replaced the fuel filter this morning, and cleaned out the sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter. The sensor was full of carp.

Anyway, after fitting the fuel filter, the engine started for about 3 or 4 seconds and nw won't start. There is a gurgling noise coming from the rear of the car, which I guess is a fuel pump of some sort.

Do I have to bleed the engine...any ideas ?

Cheers

yes, switch ignition on. depress throttle pedal 5 times fully untill the mill light flashes and the pump starts. let it do it's purging routine until finished and no gurgling, do it again if you wish. start it up!

Hi all

Now all OK.

In the Haynes manual in the fuel filter section it says that it isn't necessary to bleed the fuel system. Yet later on in the manual it says that the engine should be purged if air has gotten into the fuel system. Sort of contradictory eh ?

Thanks everyone, and we'll see if the poblems have been solved.

Cheers

Still judders........

To re-cap Symptoms for this TD5 Discovery, 02 Registered:

When the car has been driven for around 20 minutes from cold, it starts to judder or vibrate. Its particularly noticeable in 4th or 5th gear. If you drop gear, it struggles.
If you pull over and leave for 5 or 10 minutes, you can restart the car & off you go....for another 20 minutes, before it starts again.

I would put the symtoms to those you would experience with a petrol car with the choke left on full.

So far I have changed oil, oil filters (filter & rotor) air filter, fuel filter & MAF Sensor.

I checked the wiring loom going into the management unit mounted directly behind the battery , and there is no sign of oil or water getting into the unit.

Interestingly enough, I had to purge the engine (fuel wise) to get it to start. As I said in my previous post Haynes state this isn't necessary. So perhaps I have a fuel pipe or union somewhere that is leaking fuel / sucking air in?

Any advice or suggestions ?

Thanks

sounds like fuel as i have said.

are threre any leaks, crawl underneath the back and get you hand up around the tank connections. they rub through and the steel connectors corrade. the pipes also rub through at the rear and at the front on the chassis. check for diesel on the chassis at the front.

you need to find someone local to you with a nanocom who can check fuel pressure.

i had a 300 tdi that would run all dayif you had it flat out on the motorway, low speed it would conk out. turned out to be sucking air in through a fuel hose that had a pin hole in it.

get i vid of it doing it up on here? might help diagnose it

my mate had same problem at 40-50 mph,oil from injector harness went down into ecu and messed up the throttle position pins etc we cleaned oil out of ecu out with a evaporating cleaner and replaced the injector wiring loom.
He had already replaced the accelerator pedal transducer.
hope this helps

My money is on injector harness too.

Once again, start to think INJECTOR COPPER WASHERS.

There are plenty of threads and hints in LZ about this.

@ MW1LCR did you ever get this resolved?

I have the exact same problem or one that is very similar. Only affects the top three gears on a manual 2000 TD5 Disco.

So far I have replaced the MAF, wastegate modulator and cleaned oil out of the ECU. Probably will replace the injector harness at the weekend. Had it tested on diagnostics which suggested only MAF - cannot seem to recreate the problem whilst stationary.

Have not touched the fuel filter as yet though.

I did check that it only happened in high range though which makes it even more curious.

I found a topic a while back regarding a sensor on the gearbox which could be the culprit. (http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=5&id=34176&Itemid=81 )

Just wondered if you ever resolved it? :)

I have the same problem in which my td5 2003 model starts to judder after driven for 15 to 20 minutes or for 10 to 20 miles. Can anyone suggest how this can be resolved?

I have checked the red connector at the ECU and cleaned the oil by tissues and an air line! Drove the Disco for 15 miles and the problem started again! Re-looked at the red connector at ECU again very little oil evident. Your opinion would be welcome!
