Hi,

Have currently had the wet drivers side carpet since owning my P38 and yesterday got all motivated to change them. Got all the air ducts and strip down completed as per the excellent forum on rangerovers.net. The only trouble is that I have spent the past 3 hours trying to free the o seal screw and now I have succeeded in rounding part of it off  and was wondering what the best way to go is, do I carry on or drill it out and if I drill what do I need to do to repair.

Any help is gratefully recieved

Regards

Paul

I may be mistaken, but I think there is a spare tapped insert in the plastic inlet on the heater where the "O" rings sit, solely for the purpose if the screw seizes or strips the original hole.
In any event, get hold of a M5 X 30 or 40 mm long (Can't remember which) Stainless, Cap Head allen screw and replace the crappy Pozidrive screw with it.

Cheers Irishrover,

I have given up for today getting grim up here in Scotland so tomorrow I will bound out to the old girl refreshed and have another dig around. The screw is definatly rounded off now so I am residing myself to drilling and replacing with an allen bolt. I've read up and now I think I will have to take the dash out or is there a short cut for this as well ?

Many Thanks

It is accessible but you will have to be a bit brutal with the plastic duct to gain access. However a piece of duct tape will remedy any cuts/holes made and the duct will perform as well as before.
As the screw is definately M5, you could use a 5 mm HSS Jobber drill bit and drill the head off, the drill should centralise itself when it enters the pozidrive head, as soon as the head pops off, stop drilling as you will probably be able to grip the remainder of the screw shank and twist it out with a pair of grips.
The "O" ring replacement topic has been well covered on the forum and doing a search will give you answers to your problem regarding the screw removal.

An Update,

After 3 days of ripping apart, drilling and profanities, I have managed to complete this job successfully. I did have to drill the pozidrive screw out refit with an M5 30mm allen head bolt. Rebuild went pretty uneventful and every component has received a really good clean. Many thanks to all the advice received and just to reiterate the really good advice on this job including the step by step guide on rangerovers.net.

However hats off to anybody that has achieved this job in a day. I hope these new seals last a while:behindsofa:

Next job thermostat !

Paul,

Hi there, just rounded of the heater matrix screw so it on with the drilling then. Can you confirm if you achieved this without taking the dash out, also what size and type of drill did you use. Any additional info would be greatly apperaited.

Regards Graeme
