Really interesting vid that, thanks for posting.

Having had a 90 and now a FL I'd never argue that the 90 didn't have better ground clearance and articulation, but I know which car I'd rather be in when the going get's slippery and requires traction.

:)

im a bit dissapointed to be honest !!
if ya gonna post to show the gaylanders achievments at least show it going through water aswell so we can still all gigle when the doors move at the other end ............. happy new year aswell hippo !!!

What camera? Its a JVC Everio GZ-MS130, set to record at max setting of 720pix. I chose it as I didn't want to go HD at the time. Also wanted the 35x zoom. SD memory internal, external SD and no disks. So suitable for orf road.

Outside angles? Got some pics below. Dont have outside video.

Water? Went through that earlier on the course. I said fekin hell as the water went over the bonnet.

Whilst making the video I noticed my Freelanders 3 wheel balance is always towards the front. When going over the twister the front does rise, and then falls to bias the 3 wheel balance towards the front. If you watch the other vehicles most rise at the front, and the heavier backend keeps the front in the air. Could this be where the Freelander gains an advantage?

Good to see the freeby can cope with those pesky cross axel holes, those 2 marshalls must have got a workout from all the tratters needing a gentle push.

Is your freeby lifted? I can see all terrain tyres but it doesn't look like much else has been done to it.

Haven't lifted it as I'm not too confident it's the best thing to do. Some have had trouble. Some haven't. If it int broke'd...

Mods: General grabber AT2 tyres. Stronger sump guard. Coolant level sensor un fitted wiv kers. :D

Cheers, would love to use my freeby again off road but I'll need to get all terrains and a better sump guard first.

Do you get many issues with the tyres clogging up with mud etc or are they pretty good at self cleaning, the new at2 is supposed to be self cleaning but I don't think it's available in a freeby 1 size.

kers my arse! :D
Will do a kers write up soon. :D :p

Go for it. Sump guard is a must in my opinion. Road tyres in me last pic were near as good as the AT2. New type Grabbers are self cleaning. They just curve the inner tread gaps so stuff falls out. Mine are ok. Pick up every stone on the road though. All tyres fill with mud orf road. Faster you go the quicker they clear. Most the time the mud stays in them wiv the tread available for surface grip. Then it's squashed out or compacted when more mud builds up. The mud fights itself and most the time things are ok. Grip available. I like what I hear about the new Grabbers. If ma Freelander lasts that long then I'll get a set of them if they're the right size.

Hi Hippo...

I watched the video. It's interesting that so many of the so called "superior" vehicles seemed to struggle somewhat yet you were able to run through it with what appeared to be relative ease in a Freelander (V6, auto if I'm not mistaken) ;-)

Andy.

Oh please dont start this rubbish again...it is what it is and does what its designed to do, no more, no less.

Lets be honest that first rut was fookall I've driven my Meastro van over worst. and the 2nd course. I stopped watching at the bit where the moron in the disco with a roofbox showed us all how not to drive a 4x4. Did he even know what a difflock was for. I'm sorry hippo but that course was so tame it shouldn't have bothered a 4x4 of any marque.

The fact that apart from tyres, it looks like a standard Freelander as driven by some hairdressers and window-dressers is what I love about Freelanders - they do not attract attention - and they scare the **** out of folks like the tratter boys who think they are just for taking the kids to school.

I can see Hippo has a metal sump-guard fitted. Standard exhaust-box location it seems, and standard mud-flaps, with no rock-sliders either.

Hippo's vehicle is all the more impressive to me for what it doesn't have fitted.

Well done Hippo.
