My P38 Diesel water temp is indicating very low in the blue after a hard drive. Temp does go to the top of the blue when driven hard but drops quickly to mid blue. Car heater seems to be hot when set at 26 so thought it might be sender. fitted new sender on engine .. no change. The engine warning light flashes on for a few seconds when driving.
Had the faults checked with a computer which indicates a problem with the No 4 injecter lead.

Are these two problems connected? Going to check the thermosat but garage seems to think that its OK. Thinks there could be a bad earth.

My DSE rarely gets into the white area either....

I too checked the temp sender but found to be good.....

When booting it up a long steep hill it just about gets into the white area, but when driven on the flat for 5 minutes, it is back in the black space between blue block and white zone again....

Could be the Thermostat is missing, but I have never checked.....

Whislt a cool engine won't overheat, cool running can have effects on fuel economy and oil viscosity, so is not ideal but is better than a melted head so I have left alone for now....!!!

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the fan .. this is OK. If the Thermostat has failed I thought they failed closed? Could be opening too early and staying open. Anyway this is being changed.

Any thoughts on the engine amber light and the fault showing No 4 injector lead. Could be a bad earth .. not sure if this and the water temp. problems are related.

My 2.5DT also sits around the top of the blue, but will rise to over half way up the white area, approaching the red, if for example, pulling trailer up a long motorway incline.

It doesn't worry me too much, but I may get around to changing the thermostat to see if that makes a difference - once I have done all the more urgent jobs, that is, of which there is now quite a long list (most relate to fluid of some kind leaking from somewhere....)

Cheers,

Jerry

Not sure if this is correct , but on my p38 d it always seems to directly related to the outdoor temp. So it stays in the before the blue bit in winter and never over dead centre or in the mid zone in summer. What does this mean?

Thermostat is not working properly and maybe also the viscous fan.

Vicious seems to work ok, performed newspaper test. Also in summer the fans kick in and the roar of the viscous goes silent. Temp has never been above. 12.00
Coolant level is fine. I just worry about the it not getting up to ideal temp in winter, all the fans for the heater work fine blowing hot air on demand.
Is it is easy to change thermostat? Does anyone have a part number handy?

Just swapped the thermostat in mine as I thought it may be a contributory factor to the low MPG. Gauge is now bang half way, engine is now up to temp much quicker, heater noticeably warmer - fuel consumption, if anything a little better (but only just!)
