I have a fender which weights 1350kg and I have tools in so roughly 1650kg.

i disagree, if the air travels through the cooler quicker than in standard form then it can have less lag, but its a balancing act between boost and intercooler size, but im not talking about fitting bigger turbos im using standard turbo with boost increase and in real life situation i have less lag than before after fitting larger cooler, next move will be vvt

That is the same setup that I have!!
And it has better low down grunt and pulls up hills in higher gears.

Ok no probs, I was talkin' disco's

Well, after a night soaking in petrol, and all morning drying, now fitted with new silicone hoses - found the original turbo elbow hose had a split in it not all the way through, but certainly wont be doing it any good.....and the result is certainly noticable....nice and smooth pickup...much more drivable - so not sure which one has done it - cleaning out the intercooler or new hoses -maybe a combination, but certainly has made a difference.

I never want it to be a sports car - thats why we have sports cars...but to get it to how it was 15 years ago, with the odd tweak here and there is good going

Anyway, the first rule in going faster (well what I was told when I was modding hot hatches) is to make them stop first - brakes!! But this discussion can go on and on - so I am now going to sit back and let it go....I am happy with my couple of days work

yes i must admit i havn't got round to cleaning mine out yet but it is on my to do list.

and why is the std elbow hose to the turbo so soft ?

Started off reading about the improvements by tweaking the turbo pressure compensator and ended up with a discussion on turbo/intercooler size. Surely the point of the intercooler is to cool the air from the turbo which means it is denser, this allows for more fuel to be added (denser air more oxygen to burn fuel) and a cooler combustion temperature. This allows for a smaller turbo to do more work (creates more heat but intercooler removes it) and utilizing a smaller turbo reduces lag. If you fit a bigger intercooler the volume should not effect lag after the first increase in pressure, as once the pressure has risen it does not dissipate any quicker. However, all things are not equal, it may be that a bigger cooler flows better internally or the original cooler was not efficient enough to cool the air to the most efficient temperature. If the original cooler is designed correctly then you should not see a benefit with a bigger cooler unless you turn up the boost! You should also not see a lag unless its absolutely huge and the turbo can not make boost pressure. Does that make sense?

The adjustment to the compensator works well (as does a regular new air cleaner/filter), I did mine a good few years ago when I resealed the leaking injection pump, and it has not effected engine reliability. It was and still is much nicer to drive, especially pulling away from a dead stop and up steep hills.

Yu forget one small, but significant factor. If the volume of air per minute remains the same ( engine displacement x revs/min), then a larger cooler will not provide more volume, per se, but what it will do is, possibly, have a larger surface area, and because of this will be able to cool the air easier or cool the air more, thereby increasing its density.

Hi, yes I agree, hence "or the original cooler was not efficient enough to cool the air to the most efficient temperature. If the original cooler is designed correctly then you should not see a benefit with a bigger cooler unless you turn up the boost!" I had not forgotten this. In reality I expect the standard intercooler is not that efficient due to cost/efficiency constraints for manufacturer, and real gains may be seen with a bigger intercooler or water injection.

My 300tdi, runs a bigger inter-cooler, bigger turbo and propane injection.
I can tell you it all works together to give a very impressive package.
Even without the propane active, I overtake with confidence, I'm always amazed at the in gear acceleration being only 2500cc and with the aerodynamics and weight of a bus!

Sounds lovely but why go through the trouble of fitting propane injection??

Twas absolutely no trouble at all.
Makes the disco more economical to the extent that the mpg gained recovers the cost of the propane and it's a hell of a lot quicker
Takes minutes to fit

I would like to see pics and a description of what's involved??

done a lot of research into hydrogen gas injection (university assignment) and as soon as we get a couple more hydrogen fuel stations near me ill be looking into converting the disco, reduces smoking by 30% and efficiency by about 15% as well as giving more power win win

hydrogen.....what in a gas bottle with a solenoid bleed valve?

Hi guys, I am back since my Disco is being readied for her winter duties!
This thread really interests me, as do all the veggie oil threads so I will be spending a fair amount of time researching (and I'll try not to ask too many stupid questions!!!). I've ordered the EGR and decat kit which is on it's way, can anyone tell me definitively from the attached pic whether I have the Bosch pump which is tweakable (hopefully) or the later EDC one? Am new to Landy technology....
