i have always had a manual disco, i always thought manual was preferred to auto for towing! also does the auto have as much power as manual? as in acceleration

Yes any car that has the option of a manual or an auto box fitted the manual will always be more powerful. Even though the engines produce the same power, an autobox always uses more power so in a manual car more power is transferred to the wheels.

not entirely true above 50 torque convertor is locked so no different to manual ,for before lock up it just uses more revs for the same delivery ,but has added advantage of been easier to reverse a trailer for those of us that can

never found mine sluggish, and it isnt chipped ,t/c isnt less efficent its just a different system ,and past 50 t/c is locked so no different to manual then ,but auto means better control during slow maneuvering, has engine breaking in manual mode ,no difficult hand brake hill starts better in ice or snow as torque to wheels can go from nought to as much or little as necessary

The ones I've driven certainly felt under powered with the auto box, ok when foot flat to the floor, but a bit flat when driven more gently.

Lockup is ok, but it won't do that at WOT or in any gear apart from 4th and is there for economy, not performance.

TC means less to no engine braking at certain times, plus the taller gearing means a higher/faster crawl speed.

Yes auto's have benefits off road (I have one ;) ), but they also have down sides compared to a manual. But it's down to preference and the type of off roading you do (terrain type) that has the biggest decision on how appropriate each is.

I think they both really aren't bad. Plus and minus points for both, but really nothing drastic that would put you off either. In the end, for me anyway, it's which I personally prefer to drive which is the main factor.

1. Not true on Disco II - autobox lockup works on 3rd and 4th.

2. TC does not mean no engine braking. You can select lower gears exactly as per a manual box plus in low ratio the TC is locked up anyway and by pressing the M button you can use the box exactly as per a manual ie starting off and staying in any gear you select.

Cheers :)

Is this new to the D2, or did the D1 and RRC's also do this?

1. How often should the fluid in a auto box be changed,

2. also is there any problems to be had with oil feed pipes on an auto

Depends on who you speak to :D

1. I like to change all the fluids and filters at least once a year to ensure quality lubrication, plus it forces me to examine all oils and components to check for up-coming problems.

The other end of the spectrum are the vehicle manufactures who state the oil is good for the life of the vehicle.

Considering the modest cost of lubricants you can choose anywhere between the extremes and be OK.

2. The only problem I've encountered with oil supply pipes is the couplings on the box coming undone and allowing the oil to pump out, all over the motorway !!!!!

Others have encountered chafing of the pipes rubber sections on the engine block/sump, potentially leading to very unfortunate leaks.

talking to a guy other day,he bought a TDv6 or disco 3 in September, he has been recovered 4 times by green flag and has been un move able twice on his drive, had other scary fits of mechanical spasms, so he says he going to dig a big hole and loose it! as he works for a pipe laying utility company, as the reason he bought it to travel to where he is working on such a line
not very good for a 2008 TDV6 with only 22,000 miles
so either TD5 as got to be better than one of these!!

well a bit of time has gone by since this thread!
Today after months of not having the disco in my album photos, looked at many options of a replacement,ie Audi's etc, the thought of being a disco owner has come back to us, test drove many, looked at loads, but finally got it down to one, a 2004 es premium auto, on test drive it seems under powered, or is this just being used to a chipped manual! is there any way to improve the performance? the car itself has low mileage and the chassis and body work are immaculate, well worth the extra £££ to start with, any ideas?

A re-map from Mike of Dynachip will sort that out!

IMO if it seems underpowered there is something wrong with it. I accept that a TD5 isn't a hot hatch but my ES auto has no problem keeping up with (and out-accelerating) other traffic without having been chipped / remapped.

I sometimes wonder whether some of the head cracking we hear about might be down to remapping - it's bound to increase combustion pressures.

I have a TD5 manual and tow a horse trailer. The big difference for me is the fuel consumption, I can live with the 30 mpg from the manual, but not the 25 from the auto. I spoke to another owner of an auto recently who tows a big trailer and he said it was very slow to pull away at a junction and he had to be very careful.....ohand I do wonder what the auto fuel consumption is on the auto?

The manual is OK but the clutch is heavy and dead, but what do you expect from a car that can tow 3500kg on top of its own 2500kg!!!!

Each to his own I think.

This is an interesting reading :)

Please correct me if I am wrong but I seam to recall that the auto was 135 bhp and the manual was 123 bhp?? as I say please correct me
