Im on the look out for a defender and a lot of the TDi's are out of my price range.

However the TD's seem to be substantially cheaper, why is this?

I know they arnt as well liked as the tdi's so that obviously lowers value but what are the other reasons?

Is it worth buying a TD using it for a while and dropping a TDI in at a later date?

Sorry for all the questions

Gary

very much so if chassis .bodywork ,bulkhead etc is good ,if generally all in poor condition very expensive to get right and reliable ,but if just engine change later ,disco 200s are cheap and not too bad to fit,

I've seen a few about with chassis work needed, but Im competent with a welder so stuff like that dosent bother me really.

How is the TD to live with? I'm guessing it's a bit 'agricultural'

td in working in order is nice engine ,are prone to bore wear (heavy breathing) cracked heads, splitting pistons, but a good one is very liveable, if poor chassis try to get very good body etc

Dude if it helps I was in your boat a month ago I had A £1800 budget go a td has had loads of work an tickets I'll run it till it gets to bad to repair it's only got 20000 on the clock since full strip an rebuild put money aside when it goes drop a tdi in beauty is guys on here can help you fix any thing !

i could quite easily have lived with mine.. i was in exactly the same position as you. found a td with a good chassis and drove that for about 6 months, 40 miles a day on motorways. to be honest it had more poke than i was expecting when i first went to have a look at it.

however..... the tdi is such a better engine. id strongly recommend getting a td and putting abit away to save for a tdi swap, it just makes owning it so much nicer!

the TD i had was powerfull enough but within 90k of replacing the pistons etc (full bottom end rebuild) it cracked 3 pistons. I stuck another TD engine in (going back a few years before the 200tdi was a cheap option) a few years later it cracked its pistons as well. Now im running 98 300TDI 90. what a difference on power performance and it has done more miles than my TD 110csw had on it.
