Hi i have put a 200tdi from a disco into my 90 it has a 5 speed range rover box and RR axles, the wheels and tyres are 235/85 16. I have just done the London to Brighton run and i was travelling at 60 to 65 mph. i filled up and at london, worked my mpg and i was well shocked to find out i was only getting 21 mpg, my friend was following me and stated that i wasnt blowing any black smoke out at all, i did notice that the turbo seemed to be blowing/whistling all of the time is this correct???:mad:

Turbo whistles at higher speeds, if it's excessive then can point to a split hose, but it should also chuck out excessive black smoke if that's the case and it should feel underpowered.

Hose from turbo outlet to intercooler on my 200Tdi 90 has just gone and it's been pouring black smoke most of the time and feeling very underpowered, wasn't much noise apart from a louder turbo hiss as the air escaped when turbo span up.

Thats pretty poor at the same speeds mine is doing 30mpg.
Air filter clean? pump timing okay?

Well if its not black smoking i would say the filter is big enough
Where is the k+n fitted in the engune bay?

sounds quite believable, i had a 200tdi pick up 90 that i used to get 20mpg out of, that was on road tyres doing 50-60mph down the motorway, it can be improved with a larger intercooler should get you about 5-7% more and stick some injector cleaner in it might be a messed up spray pattern comming from the nozzle from the injectors, recon are around £60 each or to replace are around £110 each, so try giving them a clean. What i used to do was stick 5 litres of petrol in with a full tank once a month, and it kept it running a lot better and seemed a lot smoother.

In my experience K and N filters usually decrease mpg slightly, do you have the original air box?

Peter

The hot air from the turbo wont help but it certainly wont take ten mpg of the figures!
Ive just had new nozzles on my injectors guy on e bay 150 all four
I was getting 27/30 with the old injectors, but havent run the new ones long enough to even bother check the figures, i did take the old ones to work and check out the spray pattern only was was any good!
So they would have to amazingly ****ed to cause the mpg to be as low as yours, then you would see smoke of some description or another.
Have you driven it at night to see how much smoke in the cars headlights behind you?

mmm. Mine manages 26mpg c/w 265's, roof rack, roof spots, snorkel, heavy right foot and oh......1.5ton boat hanging off the back! Tyre pressures???? Can make quite a difference!
:ballchain:

Guys,
mine is a 300 tdi but should be similar on fuel. I was getting 22 mpg until had the pump rebuilt, added an Allard intercooler with a slight pump tweak, electric fan, EGR blank, Removed centre exhaust box. Now get 28=30 mpg. I dont drive for economy so more would be possible.

Actually worked mine out properly for the first time in ages last week
To work and back 15 miles, 10 of which is all town work 27.5 mpg which i was quite pleased with.
This is with new injectors and is roughly 280 miles to the tank, pretty much what it was doing with the old injectors

Dont mean to detract from the thread (sorry) - just a quick question Lynall were these the injectors that you got from ebay?

Thanks for your reply - do you think that the bosch ones would be any good? I think POS posted somewhere that the bosch ones were made in india or somewhere exotic - what that means in relation to quality I coudln't say as i have little experience of such things (probably soon find out!)

Yes as the injectors are bosch original equipment
Im sure the ebay guy had two prices for recon units 150 for the non bosch injectors and 200 quid for bosch nozzles fitted.
Might be worth contacting him and see if he will recon yours.
