Came off the mway just before and at the roundabout it cut out startet back up again no probs but happened again at the other roundabout thought nothing of it but when I got home 5mins later cut out and wouldn't start again for 5mins, then a bit of smoke put it on the drive to have a look tomoz, but has anyone got an idea of what it could be? Cheers

Does it start up(with difficulty) but not rev up

It did last night but this morning it started up no probs I'm reckoning HGF as it seems to be reaching temp too quickly but it isn't loosing water or oil????

Unfortunately with all the (well deserved in my opinion) bad press the 1.8I K series engine gets many people presume that the head gasket has failed without checking for other faults first. I would get the fault codes read first as the fault could be related to either the mass airflow meter, camshaft sensor or the crankshaft sensor (latter usually allows engine to start when cold but not when hot) If the water and oil levels are remaining constant and no signs of coolant entering the oil, or vice versa, head gasket failure would not be the first thing I would look for. Rapid temperature increase could be due to thermostat failure where the stat fails to open (they should fail safe (open) but this is not always the case)

We talking fast cranking like its spinning up fast enough to start, but isnt.

Or are you getting really slow cranking, like no fuel to engine?

Also if you opened the bonnet and the coolant level is ok , i suspect its not a real FL1 1.8k :)

Real slow crank like the battery was dying (batts fine) upon checking in the afternoon the rear rad hose has split and now no coolant at all replacement coming on Monday :-D
