Hello all,

My td5 discovery seems to make a moaning sound when i first start driving it after notb running overnight. It seems to only occur on the first couple of times that I take out the clutch, and then for the rest of the time it is absolutely perfect.

Any thoughts? It doesnt change the feel of the car or anything like that. just a strange moaning sound.

Thank you :)

thanks, all main fluids are correct, just been serviced and oil changed every 6,000 miles. to be honest it has done it for the couple of years i have had it, not every time i start it, but when i leave it for a while it is most common. Its like it is groaning almost.. could that still be a thrust bearing? it runs fine after a couple of seconds of running, almost sounds like a bad pump somewhere but i cant work it out.. I think i will try to record it next time

That will be your spigot bush in the back of the crank, common TD5 problem, needs gearbox out & flywheel off to change.

spigot bush noise will occur with clutch pedal half down and go when fully down, release bearing will still be noisy when pedal fully down

Thanks James,

I've similar whining in my clutch and the info you supplied tallies with the problem I have. The clutch whines between gears and especially 1st to 2nd and 5th to 4th and when in reverse. However, the problem is apparent during the clutching process and the gearbox/(spigot bush noise) is quiet when fully depressed or when in gear and driving. I was told by a dealer that it was the dual mass flywheel. I also tried to solve the problem by replacing all the o-rings in the fuel pressure regulator. It certainly has finely tuned the acceleration but not stopped the whining.

even with new bushes sometimes the bush is tight ive had to emery them out a bit so a good sliding fit,but is esy if you have plenty of spare gear box shafts to check with ,not a very good dealer if he thinks its dual mass as they give metallic clunk or vibration

Sounds like the dealer wants to sting you for a new flywheel. They'd change the bush at the same time and you'd be none the wiser just a lot poorer. You can get replacement bushes off fleabay if you dont want to pay stealer prices.

Thankyou for all the advice!! It only occurs on cold mornings, for a few seconds... and for the first couple of feet of driving, and then it sounds perfect... it seems to me like its a pump of some sort.. a little confused!

James, MANY thanks for the info. Can I do a test for the flywheel such as going as slow as possible in 3rd gear and checking for vibrations or is a test that for a dragging clutch symptom?

Perhaps I need a pressure plate as the clutch pedal is noisy and quite heavy to depress?

Paul

dual mass is just like having a flywheel cut in half with rubber sandwiched between ,but they cant completely rotate as they made in such a way that if one moves to far it hits a stop on the other ,hence vibration and metallic clunk ,vibration as they become loose and clunk as they now when clutching hit the stops ,usualy noisy at tick over
