Hi all ,we bought a 2003 TD5 Discovery Manual and it seems(to me that is ) to have a very noticeable turbo lag when moving off and in every gear . so you have to floor it and it goes a little and when the boost hits then its like an animal ,and if you slow down you have to go back to the lower gears to speed up . the disco has 100,000 miles and runs great otherwise ( it will do 90 MPH easy )

this may have something to do with it but im not sure . i had to change the turbo because something fell on the engine and broke it,but thats another story . i noticed the original turbo boost wastgate rod is slightly shorter than the one i was replacing it with so i put the shortend one on the new turbo .

any help will be great

If anything a shorter rod will increase boost as the wastegate will open at higher pressure. You would need to be careful about peak boost values as much more than
1bar will make a standard ECU switch to limp mode until you cycle the ignition. Are you sure the wastegate is closing fully?

yes i am sure it is fully closed .Its just a strange thing because all the auto discos ive owned never sufferd from this and also the 110 defender we had never did this .

Dont mean to bust in on this thread but my 03 TD5 sounds like it has the same problem!

Its very laggy in every gear until it hits 2000 rpm then takes off.
Could I try unplugging the MAF to see if it cures it like Defcrazy did ?
But first whats a MAF and where do I find it ?

Regards,

Steve.

If the MAF unplugging thing doesnt work then see this www.discovery2.co.uk / Waste Gate Modulator - Over boosting

I just realised my disco had a similar problem, check all the seals and connections on the turbo, you could just be losing pressure, mine runs and pulls away much better now

no disadvantages at all ,only gains . i cheked all other possiblities (waste gate , boost controller, hoses, pipes and intercooler ) before i chose to disconnect the MAF . it still runs great and im happy
