i,ve just changed all the filters on the disco because she decided not to run above 2000 rpm in any gear for the last two weeks, i changed the fuel filter and done the usual bleed proceedure as discribed on here, but no start. so i took the new filter back off to see what the score was and it was bone dry? i.ve kind of checked the fuel tank electrics and all ok, i turn the key and cant hear nothing, so i,m guessing my fuel pump has stopped working some time ago with no whinning or screaming noises, can anyone shed some light on this matter for me? is there something i.ve not done right?

D1 is a mechanical lift pump, driven off camshaft-when changing filter,I always brim the new filter with fuel prior to fitting-gives the battery a chance

That's why the lift pump (situated on the left hand side of the engine as you look at it) has a little priming lever that can be used to fill the filter and bleed the system if necessary.

......... If you've got a Td5 this was my expierience ........

or this :) ...........

Had the same with my diso td5 03 auto (62k).

I changed :- Maf sensor, fuel filter, injector wiring loom (oil present at the ecu) re-wired other part of injection loom to ecu to rule out remaining oil making it's way out ............ none of this worked !

It was the fuel pump ....... 30 min job to change and the best price i found was Island 4X4 (kent) mail order.

Good luck

its a td5, i,ve changed the fuel pump in the diesel tank, all is well now but when i turn ignition on to the red lights stage i hear the fuel pump pumping but it does,nt seem to stop? i,m almost sure my other pump used to stop after a few seconds? could somebody listen to their pump ans see if it stops pumping. many thanks for your replies folks.

Not sure about the td5, but if you fill the filter with fuel, refit and make sure the bleed screw is closed, then crank with starter motor you might find it pumps the air out the system. Bit spluttery at first but worked for me on a 300 tdi

When i did my td5, filled filter with fuel and then repeatedly (about 4 or 5 times) turned ignition key to stage 1, could hear pump scream at first then it got quieter and quieter before i even started to try and go to stage 2 on turn of key(starting her up), she fired up first time, mine always made a wineing noise each time i started her between turning key and glow plug coil light going out once started couldnt hear anything, mind you never stuck me head down there whilst running.
