Hi,

I am to a point where I will be buying my first landrover discovery 300 TDI 1995 on Friday, hopefully if nothing is falling off it.

It is a 300 TDI es model with 2" lift for standard height

4 recent off road dakka mud tyres

safari snorkel air intake

gardian winch bumper

roof light bar with lights

8"wipak spots on bumper

td5 black headlights

clear indicators

Is there anything that I should be looking out for faults etc. I know that they have a bit of a rust issue in the arches and boot floor but any specifc engine noises etc.

Thanks

Sounds nice but personally I'd be looking for something that doesn't look like it has been used off road much. If you're looking at landy that has been kitted up, then the chances are it has been used off road a lot.

I don't know how much they want for it but I would take a guess and say that you could probably get a newer (standard) disco for less money.

Hi rich,

Well its a fairly clean and only done some light offroading that I know of. I used to have an suzuki SJ (probably swearing on here) but they are amazing off road. I will be using it everday and they arent good on a day to day basis, so wanted the comfort.

I opted for one that already had some kit on it because the amount that im buying it for doesnt outweigh getting a standard one and adding to it plus its the ES model with all leather and full electrics.

I have a 1997 Audi a3 sport that I was going to p/x i put if up for 1295 and putting 200 to it. I have been all over piston heads and the other sites and seems very clean well looked after for its age / price.

I am 24 and my father recons that I will not be able to put up with the sluggishness that the TDI 300 has but work commitments means that I can not justify the V8. Are they really that bad?

I used to have a BMW 3 series but decided I wanted an off roader but going from a 3 series to a disco or defender seemed like a big step at the time, so I thought I'd compromise and get something that handles relatively well on road, and could go off road. Ended up with a Freelander TD4 and although it was nice to drive, it didn't take much for it to meet its limitations off road.

So now I have a disco 300 tdi. Yes it is slow (that said it will happily do 70 on the motorway) but you get used to it, just pretend that you're driving a tank and all of a sudden, doing 40 mph up a 60 mph steep hill doesn't seem so bad after all.

Plus with the 300 tdi, you have the added benefit of being able to run it on 100% vegetable oil during the warmer months.

Hey,

Seems like we had the same doubts when it came to it. I really do want to get back in to off roading must admit I am a little put off but you can have the best of both world on a budjet!

Also can I ask if you have free wheeling hubs and if they help with MPG? also what are you getting out of yours.

I was thinking of getting an intercooler aswell.

free wheeling hubs wouldnt help as a disco is a permanent 4x4 and you would have to run it with diff lock engaged all the time. You might as well remove the front prop for the same result which wouldnt be much tbh.

If you want to improve your mpg give it a good service, clean out the sedimenter, blank the egr (about £5 iirc) and decat the exhaust (about £15-20).

Then try not to drive it like you stole it ;) Its easy to get used to just plodding along and with a manual disco you should have no problem getting around 30mpg

you can actually buy free wheeling hubs with kit that converts diff to rwd unless diff lock engaged when it locks front axle to back similar to series vehicles ,dont know if it saves any fuel ,shouldnt think so but you can get them

Hi,

Not all 20somethings drive like they stole it.... i do but cant speak for everyone else. If I had the money it would be a CJ-7 or a Bowler.

all taken on board. My farther used to work for specialist lesuire as one of the fitters /engineers there so he can do all these mods for me!

Thanks guys much appreciated.

Only MPG increase that I would be looking for but wouldnt want to make it any more slower!

rwd conversion wouldnt make it any slower and may give small gains but prob not enough to pay for the conversion in its lifetime.

Although a rwd disco could be fun in the snow ;)

The driving comment wasnt based directly at you Phil but the move from a car to a disco is different and the best way to get reasonable mpg is to just drive easy. They weigh around 2 tons, have the aerodynamics of a brick on a skateboard and dont have massive power but they will pull you out of the crap and as has been said on other threads tow an artic up snowy banks :D

bobbler,

hahahah :D

It only from knowledge of the SJ that already had FWH on it. I have not got much knowledge on the discovery side but like i said with my Dad previously doing it and working with Specialist Lesiure it should be all good.

Hopefully the one that I am going to look at will be straight. Its a big lifestyle change getting the disco but more practical than you can imagine arent they. I am going on Friday to look and hopefully buy it so ill get some pics on here!

Cheers Bobble

One thing to keep in mind is that it won't be perfect, expect some niggles. It's a Land Rover thing.

Its the chassie and body work you want to have a good look at.
Mechanical stuff you can sort with relative ease and cheap, a wroten chassie can give you a lot of trouble
