Got a disco 200tdi in the 90 and its started making an odd noise from the front of the engine... sounds like 2 ceramic plates rattling against each other :confused:

Quite sure, but not positive above the engine noise, that its coming from one of the pulleys..but all belts are ok and the pulleys aren't loose..

Its constant, whether i am driving or idling...can really hear it in the cab at idle...

Any guesses??

loose crank bolt and worn keyway at a guess-common fault-check crank bolt tightness

Hmmmm...just had another quick look, between showers...could it be the alternator? It is all sooted up and the noise seems to be coming from that area...i daren't put my ear any closer!!

:confused::confused:

If you place a long screwdriver onto the alternator body and place your ear on the handle you should be able to hear whether the bearing rattle is coming from there.

Bit like a poor mans stethoscope!

I had a similar prob on my 300Tdi
Don't know how similar the 200s and 300s are but I tracked it down to the tensioner pulley bearing. it gets a lot of force so wears out. common problem so I'm told. Bearing about 6 quid from ebay.
Spay a bit of WD 40 in and see if it stops. If so youve found it. It wont stop for long though. a couple o minutes at most!!!

200 doesn't have a tensioner pulley ;)

It would partially quiten stuffed bearing, but If the bearing is good that Jungle Juice will do damage to it.
