I've been trying to work out a way of fitting a 6 speed box to a Disco 2 to drop the revs when traveling at motorway speed.

Does anybody know if it is possible to bolt a gearbox from a Disco 3/4 to a TD5 engine or would this mean a custom bell housing?

Would the transfer box fit or is it a different set up?

Ultimately it would save fuel on long journeys but is the cost of modifcation going to make to costly?

The transfer box is electronic on a disco 3 and the gearbox is full of sensors that will have no where to go on an older one. I don't know what the gearing ratios are on a disco 3 but ours cruises at 70 in 5th gear. 6th gear isn't really needed. I suspect all of the ratios are much higher and you will have no diff lock or low range without figuring out controls.

In theory, Anything can be done but it would be down to price.

Youd have to check the difference in ratios first....probably the top gear will be near enough the same so no gain in fuel consumption. The 6 gears are just closer together to keep the engine in the power band easier.

the amount it would cost you for the conversion(if it could be done) would take ya about 6 years to recoup the money

you could always remove your lead boot that might help

It's not that I drive with a lead boot, I try to keep the revs down as much as poss, It's more when traveling at motorway speeds if it was possible to drop the revs by about 500 rpm then it would save fuel but generate less noise in the cabin.

It might be easier to look at a Puma 6 speed, as that at least uses a version of the traditional Transfer Box.
Doubt it's worth the time and effort though.
