I have an intermitent gas smell coming from my Freelander. Having searched the forum I have come across this reply to the same question.

The gas smell will be your rear diff over heating and burning the diff oil. This is mainly caused by mismatched tyres and potentially VCU failure.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED THIS AS IT WILL DESTROY THE REAR DIFF AND IRD!!!

I had new tyres fitted to the rear last October because the previous ones had worn down on the outside edge (castellation?). The gas smell started on monday and having looked underneath today there is an obvious fluid drip from the, I think it is the rear final drive unit. Where number 2 is in this diagram.

Fixing anything like this is beyond my abilities. Can anyone give me any advice as to the cost and to whether it is worth fixing.

Any advice or comments welcome.

Brand new full exhaust last October. It smells like domestic gas and there is a drip coming from the rear diff. I have been on Bells engineering and under their symptoms section it does describe the ''noises'' I have been getting on a full lock reverse.

It looks like the end of the road for my Freelander.

Fixing the leak from the rear inspection panel is really easy, unbolt the inspection panel, clean up the mating faces with a dremel or some wet and dry, and refit using some instant gasket or etc silicon sealant. Doing this will also allow you to inspect the diff for any damage and renew the oil. If there is metal bits in the old oil then the diff is damaged.
