P38 DSE ...how to get 39mpg

It just goes to show with a light foot and a few extras you can manage good economy on these 'gas guzzlers'

Info for those interested I did an experiment:

PSI box - tuned for max economy
half tank of shell Premium Diesel (V-Power)
rear seats removed
windows closed
aircon off
Redex Injector cleaner full 500ml into 45 litres of fuel
Morris 15-40w fleet oil with friction reducer and new filter
Water wetter coolant
New fuel filter
35PSI an all tyres
Never rev above 1500 before changing up (saving your engine in the long run) and not above 50mph
Autoglym resin polish followed by super gloss coat
Roof bars, front spots, front a bar, side steps, mud guards removed

278 miles later
Av consumption 39.6MPG

If that is the reading off the display, then you are dreaming. With the powerbox fitted, it over reads considerably. 28 to 29mpg on my display with the powerbox equals an actual 23 to 24 mpg on a brim to brim check

Please can you explain how you tuned the PSI Powerbox for "max economy".
You must have done a lot of trial & error to reach that economical point?

you must be bored sh*tless driving like that, i got a 4.0 v8 but fu*k driving like what you have,if your worried about using a little to much diesel then a range rover aint for you go buy a yarris or somthing like

Well said Clarkie. What a boring feckin post.
As you say, just another poser who wants to run a big motor on a Yaris budget.
Why not strip the complete interior out bar the drivers seat and have no more than 5 litres of fuel in the tank at any one time to cut down on the weight.
Run it on free , used veggie oil free from the local chippy and save even more money !!
Sick and tired of reading posts from Rangie "Wannabies" whose first priority is cheap motoring..I've got news for you.....you are going to get a wake up call.

Nice rant, many sentiments I agree with but whats wrong with chip oil? I use it all the time but spend a fortune on my P(money pit)38 on everything that goes wrong. I use cheap oil to f..k the taxman, its not the cost but the rip off that ****es me off.

Not gonna slate it mate.. But why would you wana remove the rear seats? does this warrant the xtra mpg?? Not really in my book.. the rangie I assumed was all about a luxury vehicle combined with off-road ability. these 2 together are not really a good combi for good mpg anyway, I have to agree with most on here, if your looking to get that much from the dse most of the time then you might wana consider another choice of vehicle. I certainly aint going to start stripping mine to its bare essentials to get a little more miles out the thing

A powerbox alters input signals to the ECU, not output signals, therefore cannot affect the MPG reading. Sounds like your RR just isn't good at maths, assuming you are.

he had to remove the seat to cut the hole in the floor for the 2 people in the back that where running like the flintstones to move the rangey!!! yabba dabba dooo!!!!!

Look again, the power box goes between the outputs of the ECU and the FIP, it modifies the injector timing comanded by the ECU. The ECU is unaware of the changes and thus continues to calculate fuel consumption on the basis of the injector duration it commanded. The proof is that mine always displayed 28 to 29 mpg with the power box which equated to a true 23 to 24 mpg, with the powerbox removed because of gearbox problems it displays 23 mpg which is pretty accurate as confirmed by brim to brim checks. The only power mod that changes the ECU outputs is a remap

Well said that man!!!!!!!!!
At the end of the day whether it be a L322,P38 or classic, Range Rovers are all 2 to 3 ton non aerodynamic bricks built for luxury with tremendous off road capability, they will never be cheep to run. Thats why I sold my classic and baught another series for my weekend work(as-well as she was getting recked inside).
If he is after economy then perhaps he should look at putting the P38 back together, selling it and buying something cheaper VW POLO for instance.

Er, NO!

It was an interesting experiment and what the hell is wrong with that, guys? Despite the sniping the OP showed that a lardy vehicle CAN return decent mpg if needs be. He did NOT say that this is how he intended to continue or even suggest that anyone else here should follow suit. Heck, isn't anyone here impressed at the capability of the RR if push came to shove?

And any real Landy 'enthusiast' who thinks that swapping to a Yaris or a Polo is a 'logical move' or the answer to everything is a Knob!

The joy of this site is the variety of approaches we adopt to fettle our Landies and to push back the frontiers of ignorance, and our ability to share this info.

As has been said elsewhere: if you don't like what's been written, then don't read it! It works both ways, guys!

As for the ECU stuff, I think I need more info on this. Not sure that I would want to spend a lot on a new ECU or remapped one only in order to gain better mpg (and save back the money it cost me) ... but to get better performance with optimised mpg, then gimme gimme.

Why not just slip a polo engine into his p38 it should run along quite nicely..........................down hill of course.

he's probably long gone now.. into 30+mpg land so pointless bashing him anymore
