Fuel pump has now died on my disco td5 auto 03 (62k) after refusing to die completely for over a week giving me all sorts of misleading rough running and mis-firing symptoms ! But i've sorted a few other little things out so not all waisted time.

Any way ............. any helpful tips for the job in hand ? :)

Its a simple enough job, i`ve taken mine out a few times. The 4 pipes are colour coded so make sure they go back in the same place, (i got a felt and wrote on the boot floor panel so it is always there under the carpet). Remove the wiring connector, Unscrew the big lock ring and the pump will jump up a bit as it is spring loaded against the tank bottom. When replacing make sure the seal goes on the lip of the tank correctly or the pump wont sit level and it will be difficult to get the lock ring back on, and it will leak. Screw the lock ring back on, the pipes just push back in untill they click, connect the wiring and youre done. I can easily do mine in 20 minutes. Dont forget to prime the fuel system.
Switch the ignition to position 2 and wait 3 minutes,
Switch off and wait 15 seconds, fully depress the accelerator and crank the engine.
When the revs exceed 600rpm release the accelerator and ignition.
If it doesnt start up repeat the above.
Good luck

many thanks squizzel,

Exactly what i needed :D.
So is the ignition at position 2 and pump the pedal 5 times a different proceedure ??

Also i see u have a moggie minor, restored one myself many years ago as my first car ....... great old motors ....... must get another one sometime :)

I changed my fuel pump a few weeks ago... when completed i turned the ignition on and pumped the pedal 5 times or so, and it initiates an automatic purge of air from the system. Your engine management light will show if done correctly and you will hear all sorts of gurgling and air being purged. Procedure takes a few minutes to complete its cycle. I did mine twice just to be sure.

Engine started on the key.... and no issues since.

Hope this helps

The pump the pedal 5 times is another way of doing it and it works as i have used it myself. But it is not the recommended way by land rover.

My moggy is nearly finished now follow the mig welding link in my signature and you will see all the work thats been done. When its finished i have a spare engine to play around with, Hillman imp pistons and mg metro cam are on the shopping list :D

thanks for the advice chaps ......... very helpful.

Should be a straight forward job tomorrow now :)

Had a look at your moggie pictures on the mig welding link .......... brought back loads of good memories , strangely of all the same areas on the car !!
Mine ended up far from standard by the end ......... i think it's something you have to do !! :)
Might sign up and have a look as i'm a time served sheet metal and welding engineer.

Regards
