New to this forum and need help quick !

Bought a 1994 L reg Disco 300tdi manual drove it 160 miles from Bath and have now been told that engine could well be cooked.

black and blue smoke, no power, funny noises, oil light on and oil apparently like sludge.

I live in Essex the vehicle is at Gratech in Maldon right now and they hve quoted me for a breakers engine and fit approx £1300 is this fair or should i be shopping around .....any ideas appreciated

The car is sound in terms of running gear and chassis and has had all the welding etc and full respray the car cost me £800.:(

Alas i'm not mechanically minded otherwise i would be.

The mechanic mentioned that it would take him about 10 hrs (£45 an hour charge) does this sound right for a specialist

tks for reply btw

Yeah 10 hours is about right, as for the £45/hr part, I'll leave that for you to decide

Could you not find your own engine to supply to him? No point in putting a brand new engine in it, no matter how good it was for £800.

Yes I could source an engine I guess but again i'm not really going to know if it's anygood as I don't profess to being in the know.

You've been helpful so far - I suppose i'll try haggling and look at the car as a long term project

tks for the message George and DiscoLew appreciate the advice - if i'm honest had a good chat with Gratech and whilst they may be a little expensive if anything does go wrong i have their word (i'll also get in writing) that they will fix it ie; head gasket goes etc on donor engine. I'm thinking i'll go with this option for piece of mind especially as they have checked the rst of the car out and it's in good nick....could do with 2 fronts eats in tan leather just in case anyone has such!!! I'll keep you posted with pics

and 10hrs ,
could do it faster at the road side ;)

10 hours so i gather is a bit strong - I'm not disputing the sale of vehicle to me as to be honest I knew the engine was ****e and the seller did say it burnt oil...thought it might be a repair jobby more than engine swap....i'll bite the bullet but at least now have some ammo to neg on the price

Quick update for those who care.

New engine in and running very well, fitted new heavey duty clutch fork too and some other bits.

This will make you laugh - the idea of getting the discovery was so wife could drive and fit all the kids and dogs in - she now refuses to drive and wants her freelander back!! may well see it up for sale/swap soon ........unbelievable

Have a bit of fun in it, then see if you are really prepared to down grade to a freelander.

There is group of us going green laning around Essex this Saturday (see Essex Lanes in green laning section).
Get yourself some recovery points fitted and tag along. You will be surprised what your Disco can do.
