Alright guys bought a whole new sedimenter as i had no confidence in draining the old one anyway tried to remove it today but its been messed with before and the nuts on the fuel pipe have been rounded
Decided to have a go at draining it and after spending some time managed to ease the plastic screw out drained about 1/2 a pint of horribe stuff out then it ran clear .
My question is should i look at having the unit replaced or will the draining and addition of a new fuel filter be sufficent thanks for your help

If its not leaking i would leave it for now and just put it on my todo list when i have some new ends and olives for the pipes, should be ok for another year unless you are using bio and had a really dirty tank.

Never touched the drain screw on my sedimenter, there is a 11mm bolt at the top which if you unscrew releases the sedimentor bowl and gives you plenty of access to clean it.

You are supposed to replace the seals when you do this but there has been a time or two where i didnt have them to hand and had no problem with leaks after putting it back together.

Very good advice, the plastic screw perishes and lets go without warning, emptying tank of diesel in no time, seen it happen twice now, 0nce on 2002 fender xtreme and other 2004 my Disco.
thats cos yours if intank pump fed filter. i would by pass sedimentor and drain occasionally on filter drain screw ,your worry is not fuel leaking out but air been sucked in ,its not a necessary item better removed

No, i'm talking about the **** plastic bleed screw to drain sedement from filter which is bolted on the chassis rail right rear of TD5 Disco and Defender, maybe others as well but have first hand experience with each as mentioned. It is in a vulnerable position behind wheel where it can be easily broken, best to replace with a metal one.
