ex MOD 110 - good or bad?

I'm still building up to buying my first Land Rover - so far, I've settled on a 110 Defender of some sort.

There are quite a few places around that sell ex-MOD 110's, but I've read that the 24V electrics and non-turbo diesel engines can be a problem.

On the other hand, I like the thought of the regular servicing they'll have had and, possibly, things like uprated suspension.

I was hoping somebody could give their opinion on whether the benefits (whatever they are) of an ex-MOD 110 outweigh the potential problems (whatever *they* are) I'd get?

It's not easy picking a Land Rover, is it?

It is just like buying any vehicle, there are good ones and bad ones, you just have to sort them out. I have bought ex-MOD for over 20-years and really like them.

The 2.5NA D is a fine if slightly underpowered engine, in good condition and well looked after they will go on for ever and still return a reasonable MPG figure (28MPG should be obtainable even in a 110).
Forget 24V. The vehicle electrics retain the normal 12V system with just a few changes (lighting arrangements etc) while the 24V system is entirely separate and can be removed completely in just a couple of hours. All it means is that your engine will have spent more time stationary running to power the 24V system.
Inside they are basic but then again that gives you a blank canvas to start with.

The 24v stuff is for all the radios and stuff the military use. You might be lucky and still have the fag lighter!
