I'd be more worried about what looks like rust on the rear bulkhead and the door hinges...i hope its sand or mud...

He says mechanically sound but doesn't mention the state of the chassis etc..

Oh...i try to clean/tidy anything i'm selling...not bothering to even move milkshakes from the cab gives the impression he isn't bothered....

my discovery td5 has done 175000 miles and the engine is still going strong with no problems bar a loose vacuum hose..

I think it really depends on how it has been driven and looked after.

An engine can be trashed after 50K miles if not looked after, while a well-maintained and one could be fine with 150K+.

Service history is a big factor, and the look of the vehicle, especially under the bonnet - you should be able to tell if he's been 'cared for'.

I have a 300 TDi so am not the expert, but understand the TD5 has three main problems: cracked heads, broken dual-mass flywheels and oily injector looms.

Most of the first should have been through rectification by now, but there are still a few around. Flywheels go at high mileages so if it hasn't been done (ask to see receipts) then factor in £600 for the repair, the loom issue is relatively minor.

Mechanically they are pretty good.

Good luck!

Yeh, Im going to wait til the auction has run, and if he has no bids give him a ring and have a chat about the car. As it is Cairns and im in Melbourne (3000 km away) I would have to fly up there so not going to have time before the auction ends... I wouldnt buy a car on ebay without looking at it first though.

I have bought a lot of landys off ebay, unseen. However i ask a lot of questions and expect to see a lot of photos...if i had to drive 3000km in it i'd probably walk away from this one tbh...just seems badly advertised.

i know what you mean... but some people are just a bit relaxed and dont seem take much care in the advert... I bought a 110 in England which had an awful listing (crap photos, brief description, spelling mistakes) but was an awsome car! never any trouble. But I agree to an extent, it certainly gets alarm bells ringing.
