Right, I have started this thread for the obvious reasons of (a) - solving my own problem and (b)- yours if your have the misfortune of having to deal with this.

Problem:

-I am looking for ideas to look into what could cause a 300tdi 1997 5 door disco wander off to the right.. (only slightly.. but it wonders..)

signs and symptoms:

-the inner drivers side tyre has signs of wear on it,
-fuel consumption has gone up as a result.

The majority of us will think immediately about tyre pressures
but for novices (including myself..)
Heres what I think I need to be looking at:

  • The bushes and mounts surrounding suspension,
  • The springs and shock absorbers, steering dampers.
  • Tracking (toe in and toe out...)
So those of you who have handled this before, keeping it really short, please describe what else you would look into.

I will be posting photos of this to help others who could be scratching their heads on this. (here we go again.)

My intention is to get this sorted and help others on this...
cheers for your time.. lets have your thoughts then....:)

steering alignment
steering damper
play in steering box
dampers
bushes

mine wanders to left... done it for a while... rear anti roll bar link had broken and roll bar had jammed against axle pushing it forward on the n/s.. replaced link and it loads better but still doin it a bit.. just pulls left all the time...

i'd had tracking done, swopped wheels over on the front... finally realised the rear n/s wheel was closer to the front of the wheel arch than the right wheel..

Tyre pressures wouldnt make the tyre wear on one edge, low pressure would wear on both edges, over pressure would wear in the center so it wont be that. So i would be looking for either bad alignment or a worn bush on that side, causing the wheel to toe out.

Sounds like wheel alignmnet to me as well - especially with the tyre wear issue.

A couple of years ago I put new AT2's on the rear, whilst still running old BFT AT's on the front (it was a temporary measure whilst I was getting my wheels repainted). That made the vehicle really susceptable to tram-lining - especially on the motorway where the lorries had worn ruts in the left-hand lane - the car snaked all over.

Got some food for thought. thankyou guys, I will get under it tommorrow and find out exactly what is causing the problems...

Just a quick apology to Hughsey... my spelling is meant to be Wandering wagon,
but I have put wondering as I am also wondering why it is the problem.

that was my sense of humor kicking in... no offence intended there big fella...

anyway I will report back to you what it is and I will broadcast the problem.

Until then I will have a good look.:rolly:
