hi there, i have just got my self a lovely defender, spent the past few months sorting things out, and its well over due to pop a stereo in,
its ex army, so it has pretty much nothing on it. :)

i have read some of the threads on here before about wiring up a stereo but there have been quite a few ways, whats the best way of going about this, thanks tom. :)

you only need 3 things,

Permenant Live
Ignition Live
Ground

You can pick these sources up from exsiting wiring or run your own.

And snt forget the Speakers wires obviously :)

Exactly what BearDy said,

I took a live off my battery, ran it along the transmission tunnel, behind the fuse box then fed it through the dash. My negative goes back down through the dash and attached to one of the bolts holding the relays to the bulkhead.

I wired permanent and ignition live together so I can have the radio on when the engine is turned off, works fine but you have to remember to turn the radio off when you leave the landy or your battery will die.

Best way to mount it would probably be a mud console or similar.

excelent, i have had so many sugestions about wiring it up, you two have put my mind at ease, i think i will put the ignition on the the live aswell, i believe it will come in handy. thanks very much for your help guys, will try and do it tomorrow, just wondering if i will be able to hear it, :p

It will need a bit of oomph to hear it over the engine! But it's not impossible. I use my Landy as a daily driver and listen to music going to work and back - give the engine some revs and that's all you can hear! But pootling along, and in traffic, etc. it's absolutely fine - I can hear my dodgy music without a problem.
