Hello all - first post, and of course it is because I have a problem!

I have found a coolant leak on our defender - it is running down the side of the engine block (turbo side) behind the housing into which the water pump etc. fits.

I am assuming that the gaskets between this housing and the head/block are leaking. Is this housing separate from the timing belt housing?

Can I get it off and replace gaskets with the engine in situ? If so, what is the procedure. What bits do I need, and what parts are likely to get bust during the work that I also need to buy??

Wife uses this defender daily for work, so I have to get the job done over a weekend.

Thanks in advance.

PS - is it worth trying some "bars leaks" or "radweld" first????

Hi there and welcome.
I notice that you say 200tdi, yet in your profile your defender is a 95 which if i'm right would make it a 300tdi????? It probably makes no difference but ya never know :).

On the subject of radweld i'm not a lover of it personally, but that doesn't mean it wont work.

The timing belt cover if i remember rightly has a chnel in the back for the water to pass through, and a gasket is incorperated into the timing belt cover. Baringin mind that i'm refering to a disco 200tdi engine and i believe there is a slight difference.
if you take a look at

On the 6th pic you can see the channel on the right hand side. I would suspect that this is the gasket thats leaking IMHO.. hope it helps..

accywingy - my apologies, I guess you responded before I changed the title of this thread.

yes - the engine in our defender is a 300tdi. From what I understand, this could make the difference between being able to fix the leak on our engine or not, in that the "bracket" onto which the water pump/steering pump/alternator fit is actually separate from the timing belt cover.

This is a significant difference between the 200 and 300 tdi engines????

If that is the case, then what "bits" do I need to make the repair?

If it is the 300tdi engine, repair is easy. Remove the water pump belt. Remove the pulley rfom the water pump and the pulley from the power steering pump. You do not need to remove the water pump since you remove the entire housing on which it is mounted and replace the P-shaped joint behind it. You will have to remove the fan though with the viscous joint beforehand. You need a special tool which is just a glorified spanner with longer jaws - I would make one if you have a grinder otherwise you may be able to buy one. You should get the 300tdi engine overhaul manual availab^le on the net in PDF form from any number of sites - just use google.

Thanks guys, sounds like a simpler job than I had feared.

Anyone have any idea of the AF measurement for the thin spanner to remove the viscous fan assembly?

Thanks. You guys are very helpful.

Now - next question - is a weep of fluid out of the bottom seal on the power steering box an MOT failure? Not enough to drop the level in the reservoir, but enough to wet the output shaft.

No this is not a fail, there is actually a measurment of the amount of fluid lost in a specified time which if the leak is bad the examiner will or should do, but unless it is dripping out it shouldn't matter, after all it is a landrover!! My powersteering pump is leaking quite badly but went through test without a mention.
The only trouble is if fluid can get out water can get in as i found out after my first trip to Brierclifferesulting in a drowning noise now when steering.
Hope this is helpfull to you.
