Recently my 2a has developed a problem when starting and I would be grateful for any advice.

Sometimes when I release the key (either because its started or I've decided it needs a bit more glow plug) the starter keeps on turning the engine over. Clearly something is sticking but what? Any suggestions as to where I should start gratefully received.

I would look at the ignition switch, that's what controls the starter and I don't see it working unless that switch is on. sounds like the switch is sticking or something

shouldn't be a major to replace or fix.

good luck, I just finished replacing an entire instrument panel

There are 2 things that can cause this,
The solenoid,
The ignition switch.
The solenoid is under the bonnet towards the bulkhead near the steering box.
I'd be inclined to 'hotwire' the starter a few times with a length of wire and see if the fault occurs, if it does its the solenoid, if it doesnt its most likely the ignition switch.

how long does it turn the over after release, and what do you do, if anything, to stop it turning?

Carries on for what seems like ages but probably about 20 secs, long enough to make you think you are going to flatten the battery.

I don't do anything to stop it - except swear!!

The key seems to turn back, would it do that if it was the ignition switch?

dunno bout diseasels but presumably the starter has an engagement thingy? like a thing that slides along and meshes with the ring gear? (there's one on most of the starters iv'e seen - aint seen a landy one tho) cud it be that stickin and not releasin properly?

wont be this if it dunt make horrid grindy noises while it's still on... maybe..

if its the old type starter with out the solonoid sitting on top of the starter, the most common fault which causes overide is the bendix is sticking due to a build up of grime on the shaft and also the bendix spring could have broken, the best and only thing to do would be remove the starter check the spring if its broken you will see it, if thats ok wd 40 or any other penertrating sprayed on to the shaft will cear all the grime, to test the starter while its off connect the live from the battery to its terminal and earth the body of the starter to the neg terminal of your battery, but before this make sure what the polarity is is it negative earth or positive and wire it accordingly.

tis a pre engage stater. solenoids on top of starter!

initial assumptions either sticking drive pinion holding solenoid in, sticking solenoid holding itself in, or earth problem and solenoid windings electrically holding it in.
do you use it in muddy conditions?

Duh, I thought it was a petty.

Doesnt the diesel starter have 2 coils for the pre-engage, a pull in and a holding coil, with a built in changeover switch, cack on this might screw things up I spose.

heater plugs gave it away, even tho op didnt state!
your right with 2 coils, but there both for pull in.
one coil earth thru starter windings (series'd) so that rotor starts spinning prior to main contacts connecting and pinion engaging with ring gear. to make sure teeth engage and not smack on top of each other.
other coil is the main holding coil.
reason i meantioned earths earlier was this series coil holding solenoid in.
want to exhaust the mud pluggin first, tho both are probably a starter off job.

Sounds like you've been there and done it more times than me, I'll shut up.
but i can still be wrong!
think the principles the same, have done the s3 and 19j starters a few times.
have a couple of 2a diesel starters in the workshop (accumulated stuff) an there a lot bigger an bloody heavy!
tho i think their interchangable too.......
