Hello, i have a very well looked after P38 with 93000 kmts but it seems sluggish are they all ? On flat ok when you come to hills it needs more power ! Somebody said there is a way to get a little more power without to much expense?
Thanks :)

Hi Adam,
I saw a bloke have one , that he coupled up somewhere said it didn't cost alot he had button on dash and when he clicked it gave him a little more hp up to 167 hp aprox he told me , but he said somebody did it for him so didn't know how to explain or didn't want to! Can't chip them then?
Thanks

I just thought a variable valve turbo is also an option £500 - £700. Button on dash by one of a few suppliers alters the boost pressure by opening the wastegate on the turbo, i guess. Only difference is that engine may last less time if the boost is up continually. Torque is more your friend in a diesel P38 and all these mods enhance torque loads with HP increasing a little bit. HP is just top speed, massive HP with low torque means good top speed but several weeks to get there. See the RX-7 for an example of what I mean, great on the flat but lack of torque from a ****el engine means they are not so good up hills.

Adam,

You have same car do you? Have you changed anything at all to make perfomance better? These engines are too slow for these cars really ! Its the same when stood still on a hill and have to take off its nearly impossible! Have to put 4wd ! Does yours?
Cheers Rodney

Hi, yep 96 DSE, not done any mods as well skint, but if I had the money I would go for a Jeremy J Fearn 3x times larger intercooler and chip combo (£1500 ish), Variable valve turbo (£700), poss change air filter (£30) but debatable.

With these mode the performance would rival the 4.6 petrol but have tonnes more torque!!

You have trouble hill starting in First!! That could be all sorts of things, worth a separate thread. As an idea flush the intercooler as it will have accumulated a lot of gunk, this will provide more torque for hill starting.

Cheers

Adam

Yes , could be hey! Intercooler will try that! Adam have you changed gearbox oil and transfer box oil at any time yet? If you have had it a while only i am so confused with aft in transfer others say gear oil whats the prop oil for transfer and gearbox?

Right, first step download RAVE which will tell you which oils, can't be arsed dragging out my manual to check but it is in there.

Had ALL oils changed almost straight after buying, but mine is a manual, not an auto. If you don't want the work straight off a full service from an indie with a good land rover garage will cost £400 or so, takes 1 to 2 days and changes all oils, flushes intercooler, and is a great way to start off before taking over the maintenance of one.

start with the easy mods first, decat and get rid of the centre box, get a boost controller (20 quid of ebay) and turn the boost upto 19psi, get rid of the airbox and make a cold air space for a decent cone filter, vent the breather to atmosphere, then you can move on to a bit more money mods. send the injectors off to diesel bob for bigger nozzles and lower break pressures (220 quid), after you done them get a remap and your sorted. all them mods i done to mine when i owned one and it kicked the arse of my mates 4.6 every time.

Hi Aaron,

Empty centre Box? and the rest off the parts such as air filter etc wheres the Best place for all this in Uk ?as we are out in Spain, And diesel Bob is this a place we send the injectors off too? they send them back sorted ? and these boost controllers can one do all this his self apart from injectors of course , and remap has to a specialist in this?
Thanks for info and help
Roders:)

OK sorry forgot about boost adjustment and more importantly De-cating both good choices. Diesel bob's website explains it all but he specialises in injectors, turbo's and all engine type stuff.

Send them to him and he returns them.

As stated before get RAVE, to see where the centre box is, it works as long as you decat and works well. The most straightforward way to improve the exhaust of gases is a straight through pipe so the closer you get to that the better.

Remap wise, diesel bob sells a replacement type chip which an electronic guy need fit or remaps. Boost adjusters are meant to be self fitting, removing cat and centre box should be doable also. Injectors not without experience proper tools and some support.

Hi Adam,
If we take cat off and put pipe etc , what about MOT? Does this not get the inspector scratching his head  only they are a right lot out here in Spain what with CO and the look at everything with tape measure in hand can't change anything here without permission off them or car maker .

If the EU type approval certification says that a cat is fitted and you remove it it should fail, it almost certainly will here in France.:( Technically the same applies to changing the intercooler, fitting a boost controller etc. For any of that stuff it should be submitted to the road transport authority (DRIRE in France) for approval or you will be uninsured:eek:

Datatek is correct about the rules, and I think we all know that tests and testers (who are subject to more controls themselves) are getting stricter. Guess that applies to the ITV as much as anywhere.
First of all make sure your engine is set up right before spending money and effort on mods: as said before get injectors & FIP checked out and clean out intercooler. And no-one has yet mentioned the obvious, so here goes: dirty air & fuel filters can cut down power massively.
Still not enough power? Easiest is a PSI powerbox which can be removed easily.... but be aware of possible legal complications if you`re involved in any accident , it doesn`t matter who causes a crash, if your car is inspected afterwards you may end up in the crap.

I have said this before ALL vehicles manufactured in or after 1993 and used on the road, petrol or diesel MUST have a cat fitted. Or they are illegal. It does not matter what other fuel you may use from time to time.
