Our lasses Disco 300Tdi has started squeaking a lot and fairly loudly.

I tried the penny trick but no better, so changed the fan belt, also no better, so changed the bearing in the tensioner, alas still no better.

So now I am thinking either the water pump, although it uses no water, or the alternator bearing.

Can I get a alternator bearing or is it a new alternator?

Or is it likely to be something else?

Has anyone else had a similar problem :rolleyes::rolleyes: and how did they solve it?

Cheers :)

if it has air con slip of the air con belt and see if it stops it may be the idle/tensior pully ..if no air con then the water pump or alt. as you said ,to check them take off the belt and spin each by hand and check for play on the bearings (side to side or up and down ) or any noise or stiffness .

I know of a similar episode of a squeek and the 'mechanic' replaced the tensioner to cure it.A week later the alternator seized (which what was really squeeking) and blew the belt apart:eek:
As previous reply says take off belt and check all the bits:D

have you got the right belt on it? I think later model 300tdis had a shorter belt or at least that is what i have been told.

check the top of the tensioner there will be two raised lines and if the tensioner line has gone to the right of the one on the engine your belt has stretched too far or is too long. Mine squeeks but only when it has been raining/damp but when i bought the replacement i was told the one fitted previous was the wrong one (too long).

Cheers.

I have a short belt on, I checked from your description, thanks for that :)

I took the tensioner off and tried it with a different one, it was a lot quieter. There isn't much play or any noise on the water pump or the alternator but there is play in the one near the fuel pump.

When I refitted the original tensioner and torqued it up it is a lot quieter so maybe it was at a slight angle ???

Thanks all :) not sorted but definitely better than it was.

Update*

Changed the bearing in the tensioner - no better, but this time there is no lateral movement

Changed the water pump - Still no better.

Going to see if I can get the alternator checked tomorrow.
