If you have read my thread about the XDI gearbox you wil note that I have been fretting about the revs at 70mph. so on gut and a bit of hearsay I went and bought a gearbox thinking it was a petrol gearbox on mine not a deisel, as mine had been replaced at some point in the past. Arrives on my door step and so I arrange for a local garage I trust to fit it. THey do a rev test first then fit the new box and rev test afterwards. its exactly the same and to add insult to injury the secondhand box breaksdown on teh test. So I have had to pay for the broken to be removed and my old box to be put back in. So £500 poorer I do more research, but this time go back to the one source I forgot to check, good old haynes, and there it is bold as brass in teh gearbox section gearbox ratios !!! and the petrol and the deisel pre TD4 ARE THE SAME !!!!! I was godamn fretting over somethign that didnt exist. I have also checked into comments about the IRD drive causing the issue of hihger revs with teh orignal ratios, but again this cant be true as good old haynes clearly shows in teh diagram that the IRD has no gearing what so ever to the front wheels. Infact the only thing remaining that could be effecting revs is tyre size.

So doh and I hope others learn from my listake and dont cost themselves so much money.

Sorry to disagree but i know for a fact that they are not the same ratio..... I HAD THE SAME ISSUE!
Haynes, although a great general reference, has made mistakes.....

I got the ratios from RAVE and they are definately different.

Sorry i should be more accurate and state the gearbox ratios are the same..... THE FINAL DRIVE ratio is different.

droid interesting information can you post up your findings from Rave. I have done a quick search through the forum but cant find any info telling me different at the moment.

Perhaps a poll is in order for all us XEDI owners :)

Haynes has got many mistakes , I used to swear by them but for the FL1 facelift the manual has inaccuracies, I just use it as a general guide now when I am away from the laptop & am always wary, get yourself a copy of Rave.

its looking that way matacaibo. I have now found exactly what I need to check and im goign to get the garage to check the gearbox on monday. if you look at my Gearbox thread you will see I have posted a lot more info their.

How har dis it to do a gearbox yourself?

A bit more info the Petrol version is a S4EM 4.2 Final drive ratio
The diesel is a S7EMU 3.6 Final drive and uprated internals ( hence why my petrol box is really starting to groan now!!)

Both are PG1 gearboxes no doubt but the final drive ratio is DEFINATELY different, i know as i have one of the few sub 10 second 0-60ph diesel landrover freelanders!!!!
