88'' SWB Petrol - Slowwwwwwwwww

I posted a question i the green laning section about my 2 1/4 petrol being slow. I thought 45mph top speed (eventually!) was about right. Although someone has said 60mph should be achievable (without an O/D).

Is that right ?

It's got a weber on it and starts and runs lovely. No tappety noise, very smooth running and doesnt blow any smoke. I can do a comp test on her, but to be honest I would expect other symptoms if the engine was sh*gged.

Any ideas where i should start looking ?

I could do 55 with my old shagged diesel. Petrol should do 60 easy.

If your engine is good, had someone in the past altered gear/diff ratios perhaps?

Are you actually only doing 45? Check with GPS, I use GPS as speedo all the time, one in the Landy is useless now as I've fitted huge tyres.

Yeah, gear / diff ratio's did occur to me. Also the possibility that brakes may be dragging was another idea.

Now that you have confirmed the 60mph top speed, I really need to do some investigation. I'll do as you suggest and stick the tom tom in it and see what that says.

Series speedos are pretty useless. I checked mine with a sat nav and it was saying 25 when I was doing 35, and 45 when I was flat out down a big hill doing 60. I was quite pleased with that for a 109 diesel.

60 is achievable, but, do bare in mind it will be revving its bo**ocks off and shaking you to death... It could just be the case that you need to give it a bit more gas and hope you survive

Ear defenders and more bottle may well be the problem

mine doesnt start to work till im doing 15 mph lol

Last time i did 60 in my 2.25 it blew the head gasket
it should do 55 ok

I got 80 MPH out of a 2.25 many years ago, I'd not even attempt it now, I's say you should be at least looking for a comfortable 55 MPH.

Makes me wonder whether it is a gearing issue, because at 45 it's screaming it's nuts off. I'm going to do an oil service on diffs/gbox/engine etc before I try another speed run

Um, you are in high ratio, aren't you? Mind you 45 in low is going some, and I'm not sure the transmission would take fwd at that speed.

My 88" IIA 2.25 petrol (zenith carb) on 7.50 x 16 tyres and standard gearing would do just over 70Mph flat out.

thats because your speedo is 20 mph out

fook doing over 55mph in a series even if you can lol, the steering would have a life of it's own and the noise would make your ears bleed, i kacked myself last time i pushed mine to the limit pmsl it's like trying to control a high speed plate of jelly

Thats exactly what I am talking about LB! Although I'm hoping a new set of shocks all round, some steering rod ends and a tweak of the steering box will help

@Oxides. Nope definitely high range. And yes, I agree, if I was doing 45 in low range I would fully expect to have to pick my transmission up and walk home with it

I used to get an indicated 80 from my 21/4 petrol on 600x16s and I was able to overtake the odd HGV on motorways so I reckon a good 65 to 70 is achievable. I did break an engine doing this once, though. With all the steering bits nice and tight it went in a reasonably straight line. Not recently, though, but I've rebuilt most of the steering and I'm looking forward to decent handling once I've finished the refurb.

I used to think the handling of series Land-Rovers were not really up to doing much more than 55Mph. I think that was because with the standard engines it's fairly rare that you've got a straight enough stretch of road to get to speeds of much over 55, so when you do manage it, it's quite scary. Stick a 200Tdi in though and it's hard to keep them below 55! I've got used to it now. I feel OK pushing mine to 80. The brakes are the biggest handicap - Mine's still got the standard brakes. I think that some Long Wheelbase brakes should sort it out.

mine cruises at 50 everywhere if u have the balls to drive it round corners that quick... it's leany but it works

issue with my brakes is it locks the back up first, not so good when irish hire van does u turn in front of you.....

will do indicated 65 on the flat but its grit yer teeth stuff and your arms get sore from gripping the wheel
